I think you could consult the dentist about your worries. They have a special package for nervous patients but You will have to find out. I have been to the dentists so many times, that I just regard it as an expensive nuisance. Wish you well, skinnylizzie

Hi skinnylizzie. I had a bit of a tooth that annoyed me. My wife told me she had to see the dentist would I go with her. She encouraged me and I went. the dentist said to say Aah! He put his instrument in my mouth and popped the tooth out. He told me after, that the first thing a dentist learns in hospital is to take teeth out. They do this a lot.

I had a wisdom tooth taken out. although that was a little longer to take out. it's still was fast. The feeling of ease after is so good that you will be really glad you had this.

I was just pondering and wondering what about talking books or your favourite music plugged into your earoles and maybe an eye mask then you at least wouldnt see or hear the dentist :) .If the extraction is normal it will be over and done really quickly. Janexx

Hi skinnylizzie59, there is no simple answer to your question, many people are scared of visits to the dentist, if you are extremely nervous they can give you something to calm you, but you have to discuss it with them much easier to find your own calming methods. I regularly visit my dentist but I still get a bit tense, really don't know why. Good luck hope the chat has helped.

Dentists nowadays rub a gel into the area to numb it first,,needles are so advanced these days,,they are a lot smaller so you don,t feel it,just had to have my 2 front teeth out thanks to my dog head butting me,and my dentist was brill,,just tell your dentist your fears,, and good luck

Hi SkinnyLizzie59, I also am totally terrified of going to the Dentist (the result of a very bad experience when I was younger).

I eventually went to see a Dentist who was brilliant and gave me IV Sedation for ANY treatment.

Unfortunately, because of the severity of my COPD they are not allowed to use sedation and I needed a tooth removed. Well, to say I was terrified is putting it very mildly. I even asked if I could go to hospital to have it done, but NO, it couldn't be done.

After many tears on the phone, I eventually made an appointment and my Dentist couldn't have been nicer. He gave me a longer appointment than was actually required and told me he would do nothing without telling me first. I couldn't believe it, but I never even felt the needle in my mouth! He gave me more than enough local to ensure I wouldn't feel anything once he got busy.

Make sure your Dentist really does know your fear and he/she should make your visit and treatment totally pain free.

GOOD LUCK.

Thérèse

Hi I had the same problem I was so bad I walked (ran) out of the dentist waiting room before it was my turn I was so worked up. I went to see my doctor who was very understanding about my fear. He prescribed two tablets, sorry can't remember what they were. I took one the evening before planned extraction and one in morning. Ifelt so relaxed but not sleepy. I managed the whole experience very well and would not hesitate to seek my doctors advice again re my fear of extraction Good luck xx

I am in pain at the moment and I cant sum up the courage to pick up the phone and ring for an appointment, the dentist has been on at me for months to have these two bottom teeth, that are now giving me jip, to have them removed but I have fought with them to leave them be and now I am suffering. How am I going to sum up the courage to ring!!

Thanks again everyone for your support. I spoke to the Practice Nurse this morning, when I had my 'flu jab, and she said the doctor would be able to give me something so I've booked a telephone consultation in the hope that he'll help me. Sincere heartfelt thanks once again. Lizzie.

Hi Skinnylizzy59 Its a month now since you spoke about your fear of visiting the dentist; how did you get on? I hope you managed to get the problem sorted

Hi Ostiad, I did post an update but in case you missed it I got on fine thanks to a little white pill from the doctors and a very kind and gentle dentist. She put gel on my gums before the injection and took an x-ray so she knew what she was dealing with. It wasn't quite plain sailing because the tooth crumbled and she had to pick it out bit by bit but there was no pain and I felt very relaxed. The upside was that the dentist said I had made the right decision to have the tooth out because if it had been crowned it could have been covering up a problem with the tooth crumbling as it did. Thank you so much for asking, it's very comforting to know you care. Hope you are keeping well. Regards Lizzy.

Thank you Lizzy I must have missed your update; I try to look at posts every day but it's easy to miss something. So glad you got it sorted with help from your doctor as it's really bad when one is so scared. Best wishes June x

I was always fine with the dentists but since I became so breathless my fear was not being able to breath whilst there. Once I made the appointment I was fine and everything went well. That was two years ago. Need to go again now, more breathless and keep putting it off so getting twinges now and then, think I'll wait til it gets a bit worse! x
