I am worried about lung disease. I have had CT scan and been asked to return in 3 months. I have finger clubbing and grooves in nails. Help!

If anyone can help me as my GP seems to think nails are down to trauma. Not sure how I can have damaged nails equally and at same time!!!!! They don't seem to care. I only got CT scan as result of bad fall and trip to A & E

Harryme. Sorry you feel anxious. Understandable when you feel uncertain about your health. Whilst I can't offer any specific guidance. I'm sure some the many contributors to this group may offer some direction. Try to stay positive.

Hi Knitter. Fine thank you. Had a few more than the usual odd ectopic beats last week. Probably when I worked myself up to a peak of annoyance and frustration over nothing. Seems for me I have a definite link to stress hormones. Couple that to a few nights of poor sleep (close, humid to hot at night) weather. Be interesting to see how the Countryfile victims, I mean of course volunteers get on next week.

Hope all is well with you.

Hi Harryme my understanding of nail clubbing can be caused by things going on in the body not trauma to the nails themselves. It might help you to do a search on nail clubbing so you understand more. Hope this helps Barbs x

Waiting 3 months to have another scan is not at all unusual. It may be they have seen something indistinct that could be a low level chest infection and waiting to see if it clears up. It is important to attend the next scan, just in case. You can also request that a copy of the Clinic Letter to your GP for the results of that scan to be sent to you, it is your right to request this.

Finger clubbing can have a number of possible causes, including lung diseases, heart disease, and digestive tract conditions, even inherited. There is little more you can do but wait for the next scan and results at this time, you may then find out more.

Make sure you go to that next CT scan. If you do not receive an appointment then chase it up.

Hi.. I had terrible clubbed yellow nails as I started with Bronchiectasis 11 years ago. They reminded me of claws. Weirdly they reverted to normal after a couple of months by which time I had had a couple of infections & antibiotics to treat. My blood results went awry at the same time. The doctors were perplexed over my nails but didn't seem bothered :my husband thinks I had some horrible virus to cause them but I will never know. If you look it up on the Internet you imagine all sorts so best to try & put it to the back of your mind(easier said than done.. I'm the world's worst!)

I hope you get some answers soon Take care! 🤗

Hi! I have been checked for clubbing fingers a couple of times. I have got interstitial lungs or lung. Luckily it’s been stable for two years. I’m hoping it will stay that way. Have you got lung disease at all?

in reply toMavary

Does it remain stable for many years?

Mine is not pulmonary fibrosis as far as the Consultant is concerned. I always thought interstial scarring was pulmonary fibrosis. The fact that it hasn’t got any worse tells me he’s probably right. It was caused by pneumonia and TB together at a very young age. And pneumonia two more times as I got older. I know I panicked when they first told me as my Husband died of Pulmonary fibrosis.

Thank you for the response and good to hear you’re still doing well. Sorry to hear about your husband. Yes, pulmonary fibrosis is scary but 100’s of types exist both progressive and non-progressive.

Interesting I also suffered from Covid / Pneumonia before I started to get my cough too.

Do you have finger clubbing? Mine is very subtle / mild.

I have but I think mine is Osteoarthritis. The Consultant always checks them though. My two index fingers are really bent.

Saying that my Sister hasn’t got lung problems but all her fingers are bent over. I think as with me Osteoarthritis.

CT scan of the chest area will indicate if there is any lung disease. Make a telephone appointment with the hospital doctor or GP regarding your scan results to discuss same.

I hope you are recovering ok from your fall and you are breathing easy, take good care of yourself.

Best wishes BK
