Hi, it's part of the specialised computerised lung function tests carried out, normally, in a hospital setting. You sit inside and blow into the apparatus in certain ways and the results are recorded and analysed by the computer. Sorry, this sounds a feeble explanation, but hope this gives you an idea! Here's a link to an image of the cabin:-

I had a cabin test. For me, very necessary to concentrate on what is being asked. Nothing to be bothered about apart from that.

I wonder if thats the one where you blow down the pipe and then it suddenly blows back at you, I had that happen to me and I jumped out of my skin, xxxxxx

That sounds like the one I had Gene. Breathe though the tube they said, then the buggers blocked the tube. Instant panic! Like many COPD sufferers I am claustrophobic and I hated that cabinet.

I would explain it as a walk-in glass box for doing breathing tests. It is a more modern gadget which not all hospitals have. It,s easier in my opinion for the patient to use than the old way but I am sure not everyone would agree. It does have a technical name as stated above.

Thank you Katie, I think the one I went in was older as it was a small room, not a glass boxGenexxx

I've been in something like that, after going in once I had to use a nebuliser then go back in again and repeat the exercise, does this sound right?

do you have to go to have that more than once or does it depend on where you live?

So far, I have had it once at my first appointment with Consultant, since then I have had Bronchoscopy and CT scan with contrast in veins, I have my 2nd appointment this Thursday with Consultant for all the results, if I have that particular test again I will let you know.Genexxxxx

I've done the test three times, Peta, I think it may depend on the severity and the actual condition that you have - mines emphysema and very high severity. :)

Thanks.

I also have emphysema but I think it is only mild.

I have made an appointment with my GP nurse for next Tuesday to ask her loads of questions, included in that will be what level am I on.

I have had it done once. I have very severe emphysema Stage 4 so having it done more than once seems to be down to the consultant and the hospital. I'll ask mine if they do any more later on.

The one I went in was a brand new one donated to our hospital for research purpose so was the most upto date with glass sides, I've never seen one of the older models. It's not a good method if you are claustrophobic I found it quite confining, when you need to be relaxed to get good results.I also think it depends on the severity of illness as to whether they use this method.
