Memories, like the .......

Ho, hum. It’s Monday again. The streets have cleared, the site has emptied and I’m all alone again. Everyone is sitting down watching wall to wall soaps on television, everyone except me. I suppose I could do a blog while nobody is around. I did have a subject written down on a piece of paper but I can’t remember where I put it. Oh yeh, memory.

When I was first diagnosed with COPD a decade or more ago, my memory was as sharp as a tack. But, as the years have gone by it has got worse. At first it was the odd word, then the odd place. Now, at least a dozen times a day a word eludes me. Tonight I wanted to say something to my grandson about one of my heroes. He was a gallant hero of this country and I can easily remember his last words, but not his name. He died trying to save his mates, and I can’t remember his name.

Does anyone else suffer from memory loss as well as COPD? Oh, you’re not here are you? I forgot that. I must remember to ask you when you come back. You are coming back aren’t you?

Well I had better go and make a cup of tea so I will see you later. Oh, it’s just come back to me. The name of a man we should never forget. His last words were “I am just going outside. I may be some time" His name was Captain Oates.

no soaps on at the moment for me, got 4 mins before Eastenders.

Sorry but your short term memory problems are because of age and not COPD.

Once you past 40 its a down hill run...............................

Enjoy your cup of tea, lol

Hi Slade , Age is no barrier I have had short term memory loss since I was a nipper and it is quite a common thing.Unfortunately it is not treatable but there are programmes that can help.

Hi Bobby, hope you good, how's that guinea pig of yours ? Yep,I know what you mean,I am terrible with names,I always have been,I often call the kids and grand kids by differant names, and I do get kerfuffled nowadays, selective hearing another problem, especially when wifey says empty the dishwasher ;)

phillips1 profile image

lol John. The biggest problem I had was when I remarried. I kept calling wife 2 by the name of wife 1. Mind you, it was soon beaten out of me. Spikey is good. Stuffed with carrots and wrapped up for the night.

My memory is rubbish, worse is when I make a cuppa, then I find it has gone cold, then I make another cuppa and that goes cold, - I usually end up thinking 'blow it I'll have some lemonade'

I am married to someone like you. Cups of tea and coffee all over the house. She went to the cupboard one day and said "Where have all the cups gone". Daft bat had spread them all over the place.

Memory loss is not a new thing for me I am always forgetting things.

But the worse memory lapse was after I had moved up here to Stockport I went to Sainsbury's on the A34 at Cheadle did my shopping and of I went home I was just getting on to the M6 to go back to Coventry before I remembered I didn't live there anymore :D

I hadn't got COPD at the time I just suffered from stupidity :P

phillips1 profile image
phillips1

Ah Jan, that's something we all suffer from now and then. I lost the car once at Luton Airport. Wasn't too bothered about the car but the wife was in it. lol

Bobby xxxx

in reply to phillips1

sorted the losing car problem out, I have a union jack flag on it, my girls say it looks silly but hey I can find my car in Bluewater car park within mins

Your a smart mummy. I have a cream Kia Soul now which is quite tall so I find it a lot more easily than I could the grey Nissan Micra.

Well Bobby not sure if it's due to copd, but I have bronchiectasis and am exactly the same re bad memory. I have trouble recalling names of folks in films and also have trouble trying to find the right word sometimes.. Might be due to age!

Sorry was indeed watching Emmerdale and Corrie!

My ears pricked up when I saw you were talking about Lawrence Oates. I live about ten minutes away from where a plaque was erected to celebrate his centenary close to his family home and my daughter went to Lawrence Oates when we had middle schools.

A brave man indeed, although it is a shame about the suggestions in a biography that he fathered a daughter with a girl thought to be under the age of 12.

Whenever a man is outstandingly brave they always try to dig up some dirt on him. From the age of twelve this man was a hero to me. He will always remain so.

After your comment yesterday I went to get out my biography of Lawrence Oates. I'd forgotten I had lent it number one son a couple of months ago. Now how do I remember to ask for it back?

Hi Bobby. I have to admit I sometimes forget what I'm saying halfway through a sentence, which can be awkward! My OH has always had short-term memory loss but it seems to be getting worse. The look on people's faces when he says things like 'It's in the abattoir' [the conservatory] is priceless!

Ah you made me smile there Jude. Poor Richard, KOTC, also has short term memory loss and it must be a real pain. I just forget things I shouldn't. A woman stopped me in Sainsburys last week and was chatting away and I am thinking "I don't know who you are". I remembered later she was a former Sainsbury worker that I used to talk to virtually every day two years before. It comes to us all I suppose.
