a memory -
“Christmas is coming,
The goose is getting fat,
Please put a penny in the old man’s hat.
If you haven’t a penny, a ha’penny will do -
If you haven’t a ha’penny, well God Bless You!”

I remember that too Iris. My mum used to recite it near Christmas. Thank you for the memory.
Have a good weekend. Lots of love, Carole xxxx❤️
Thats a very memorable one. I remember reciting it as a child with a group of friends shouting it out loudly! Nice memory. Thanks xx
Thank you, yes I remember that, haven’t heard for many years. Have sunshine here, nice, but cold. Best regards, Jean x
no sunshine here, at least not raining. I am 88 so like you survived the war, many memories clearer than what I did yesterday. Do you remember this one - it’s a life, it’s a life, it’s a weary weary life, it’s better to be single than to be a married wife. There is more!
No, that’s a new one for me, wish I had old books, sure there are more. Yes my memories of living through war are as clear as yesterday, have flattened broken nose to remind me of nightmares of going to bed every night in shelter, bomb shook it, shelf came down hit my nose! When stopted bleeding few days later doctor used his thumbs pushed back to middle. NHS have always refused to try do any reconstruction! Jean x
my goose got avian flu !
thanks for all the poems . always enjoyable and at least I am learning who wrote them
Yes I remember that Iris, brings back memories if school days x
I remember that Iris. 😀 I also remember thinking that Charles Dickens with his Christmas Carol book was responsible for making turkey more popular than goose. In fact it was Henry viii who did that in 1573! I prefer Cottage Pie & beans for Christmas which is what I had 2018 at my newphews.😀
I’m not keen on turkey and anyway I hear there’s a shortage this year so it’ll shoot up in price. Cottage pie and baked beans is a tasty Christmas lunch! We have whatever we think we might fancy “on the day”. One year it was chicken and mushroom pie (also with baked beans!), another we had lamb chops. I’ve even had egg and chips! I feel Christmas is about family and kids, and time spent in the kitchen wastes the day. We always have Xmas pud though, I love it with brandy sauce. But I don’t make it myself, I look for those “taste test” articles and buy whichever comes top 😊 I don’t drink, but I always have a glass of Buck’s Fizz on Christmas Day, which goes straight to my head!
Same here! It’s just Mum and I now for Christmas dinner and, after years of slaving away most of Christmas Day in the kitchen , now we just have what we fancy. Last year it was fish finger sarnies, this year we’re fancying the idea of bacon butties 😀
Ooh now you’re talking, a good bacon butty is a rare treat for health reasons but… it’s Christmas!!! I like mine crispy, with some of the bacon fat soaked into the bread, and lashings of brown sauce. Maybe these “alternative” Christmas lunches are more common than we think!
My granny used to say that me ,thank you ,you have brought back so many memories.
We always had a turkey. I don't think a goose would have gone in our oven. love, Chris. xxx
Gosh, that brings back some memories! That was one my dad was fond of reciting.
Lovely memories
I remember this. It was taught to me by my mum.
As a country child our Christmas bird was quite often whatever my mum won at the local whist drives - and yes we did have the occasional goose.
We grew up with the same poem in the USA! Had no idea what a 'bacon butty' was, had to look it up. We have something similar, BLT - bacon, lettuce and tomato but ours is on toast. Thanks for the culinary lesson!
Remember it well.
Anyone over the age of 50 should surely have heard of this.
