Hi,
I've just been reading about salt therapy for COPD and wondered if any of you had used it as a treatment?
Hi,

I was told there were no found benefts of this. Susie Q
Two of the members in our local support group have tried the salt pipe and they say it is marvellous for clearing the phlegm. I haven't tried so can't speak personally.
About 20 years ago I volunteered for some lung research tests - they gave me nebulised salt solution to try and get me to cough up some phlegm (I have no lung problems). It wasn't nice, but I suppose does show that salt will perhaps act as an irritant and get stuff moving. (I have to say though, afterwards I developed a cough and needed a course of antibiotics to get rid of it! I declined the request to provide a lung biopsy!)
This has been talked about before its quite expensive to visit the salt caves i tried it a few times did not do me any good infact ended up with a chest infection however maybe it could work for some as we are all different ....the respitary nurse who gave us a talk at pulmary rehab said dont waste your money so its up to each person to decide if they want to give it a try, take care.
good morning I am about to start nebulized salt solution to see if it will clear my lungs a bit, it is used on babies and has an approval for prescription, GP was not pleased about it but the specialist said he used it some times, there is a 3% and 6% solution made by pari health and it is called muco clear, it works on the reversed osmosis principle making the mucos moist by dragging moisture from the body through the lung wall, and then making it easier for you to clear as the cila can work better, I will let you know how it goes,
salt caves, I have been to one but they are not like the one's in eastern Europe as these have a dry suspension of salt in the air and you actually breath in salt crystals, the theory is that people who work in salt mines have no real lung problems, quite a lot written about it but takes time to find on the net,
if that help regards Richard
We must have posted at the same time I actually phoned them yesterday and because I have heart disease as well, they said they wouldn't accept me.
I hope you get on well and it clears your lungs. Best wishes, witty
Thank you for taking the time to respond to my question. Reading what you have said, I've decided not to take this any further. It was worth considering as anything has got to be better than taking all the medications and inhalers. Thanks again, take care.
My husband used the salt pipe for a while but never really saw any improvements although he hated the taste in his mouth! However a friend of mine took her son who suffered with asthma to the salt mines (I can't remember where) and she swore by the results.
As far as saline solution in the nebuliser - this was recommended by the respiratory team for my husband during an exacerbation and it definitely helps him to clear congestion.
Take care, TAD xxx
