I have mostly had a very quiet/lazy day today. Hardly did a thing except for some ironing and cooking dinner and when I check my oxygen levels with my pulse oxymeter it was at 91 which was very high for me, considering usually at this time of the day the reading is 80 or 81. I'm only at 91 first thing in the morning...my stats drop throughout the day. Well during this time of doing nothing I've been pondering....does anyone know any connections between very bad whooping cough as a child and adult lung disease? Thanks...

I don't know about solid facts on this, but as a child I had whooping cough and bronchitis. I still think smoking did the damage for me, but those things probably contributed as well.
Funnily enough, I am also Lynne x I had extremely bad whooping cough as a child and since have always been prone to chest infections. I have been diagnosed with COPD and although I also smoked, I gave up smoking 20 years ago. I still feel some sort of scarring is left behind after whooping cough.x
I can remember having whooping cough as a child - absolutely dreadful. Like Lynne I had bronchitis, as a child, too.
Perhaps our childhood diseases left us more open to lung disease (I'm sure that it couldn't have done us any good). Again, though, I'm with Lynne - I think it was my smoking that caused my problems.

I had bronchitis and whooping cough as a child. I was a year behind at school, because I had so many days off sick.
Whooping cough can cause Bronchiectasis which is probably the cause of mine (as they found nothing else), I had WC aged 16 (I think cos I also started smoking!) even though i'd had the vaccination.
Apparently smoking doesn't cause bronchiectasis but obviously would help it. Luckily i'd given up years b4 the diagnosis x
I haven't got COPD but have had asthma since childhood and had dreadful whooping cough aged 34.
Whooping cough made my asthma a million times worse.
I have Bronchiectasis and I was informed by my consultant that I had scaring on my lungs and he thought this could be traced back to whooping cough when I was young - I was actually hospitalised with it in 1950.
I have asthma ,not good at the mo,in 1958,in 6monts I had whooping cough,measles and chicken pox,no bronchitis though ,
I had Whooping Cough when I was 10 years old even though I'd had the vaccination against it. When I had pneumonia at the age of 53 the follow-up ct scan showed what the consultant said were 'pockets of pus' in my lungs which he said was 'old stuff' and probably due to the childhood Whooping Cough. Here I am 7 years later with COPD. So, yes, there does seem to be a connection between WC and COPD. Of course, that doesn't mean that having WC will automatically lead to COPD, just that it could be a contributory factor.
When five years old I went into hospital to have my tonsils out and contracted whooping cough which became quite serious . I was diagnosed with bronchiectasis six years ago although I had had a cough for some years before. I have never smoked .
Last Dec during a particularly bad infection my GP took my blood to test for Whooping Cough. I was hardly compis mentis at the time & I vaguely remember him saying that I could have it even if I'd been vaccinated & he had to rule it out
Childhood whooping cough, measles or pneumonia can cause bronchiectasis. I had double pneumonia and whooping cough aged 5 months and was dx with bronchiectasis and at 19 I was hospitalised with measles. Bit of a double whammy.

Can adult whooping cough cause it too? I had it extremely badly aged 34.
By the way, the lung doc told me that the vaccination protects for 5 years and possibly slightly up to max 10 years. After that you have no immunity from the vaccination any more.
I had bronchitis so badly as a child I missed years of school then months every winter till I was about 18.
I'm really scared of getting even more lung problems what with asthma and a history of bronchitis and then whooping cough

I remember having whooping cough as a child and then stacks of ear infections after.
My adult daughter is asthmatic and her work colleague has just had whooping cough, she was told can be infectious for weeks. I am keeping my fingers crossed as my daughter was not vaccinated as a baby as she was so wheezy. Seems like the jab does't last long anyway.
No whooping cough for me but I was born very unwell and diagnosed bronchiectasis, had half a lung removed 23yrs. My sister now 75 did have whooping cough...she is very healthy, no lung disease!
Not had whooping cough (I'm very glad to say) but I did have chicken pox while pregnant with my 4th child. I didn't have it as a child, despite the infamous 'chicken-pox parties'!! It became clear after my first chest xray that I had had a lot of chicken pox spots actually in my lungs, which contributed to the illness. Like others have said, though, smoking certainly didn't help in the slightest!!
Hmm, so it seems there are some connections...I have not been diagnosed as of yet...it's been over two years and my breathing or rather lack of breath is getting worse...I think I shall mention having had whooping cough at my next Drs appointment. Thank you all for sharing!
I have copd emphysema and asthma, did not have whooping cough, but when i was having an operation aged 19 the anaeshtiest (sorry cant spell that) told me I had scarring of the lungs. Never really thought much of it, assumed it was from chickenpox. Although I did start smoking at age 11.
I think there is a link between whooping cough and COPD. When I was a baby I had Whooping cough, now I have been diagnosed more then 40 years later with Emphysema (COPD). Also I have never smoked.
