When I tried to get an appointment I was told there was nothing at my nearest surgery and the only one available was a bus ride away. I took it. The receptionist then said that there were only 2 asthma/copd nurses now and both of those are part time! Doesn't that just show how much they rate asthma/copd? Not a lot. I might write a letter of complaint. Has anyone else had the same thing?
Our surgery had a full time chest specialist until a couple of years ago. She saw all the lung patients and was very good, knew her stuff. Now the in-house pharmacist does the spirometry tests and medication check-ups. Having said that, she's pretty good with it too.
My GP surgery is a 7 miles bus journey away; and the nearest hospital is 25 miles away. The surgery itself is a good walk down hill. I can do that; it's the walk back up the hill that defeats me! There is a Respiratory Nurse in situ, and she's been a tremendous help - now that I know the questions to ask.
I only see the resp nurse at our local surgery twice a year. Never see a consultant as some bloggers seem to.I have been on 3 LT oxygen for over 2 years and have never been told to do any different. Any chest infections I see my GP. The nurse is good, but just takes my sats and spirometry test which havn't changed much since last year. I sometimes think I should be seeing a resp consultant occasionally.
We are so very lucky here, we have an excellent full-time respiratory nurse and a GP who specializes in pulmonary problems and both of them delightful and helpful people.
