I HAVE JUST BEEN DIAGNOSED WITH MILD COPD 2 MONTHS AGO WORRIED STOPPED SMOKING DOCTOR TOLD ME NEVER HAVE A CIG AND COPD WILL STAY AT MILD
I have also been told both that I have mild/moderate copd and that if I never have another cigarette the only thing is age that will slowly decline lung health as long as you eat healthily and exercise! Have they done a spirometry test? Heather
A good explanation of the doctors words blf.healthunlocked.com/blog...

Doctors tend not to tell porkies so he/she is probably right. If you want a second opinion, ring up and talk to one of the BLF nurses, they are brilliant. The helpline number is : 03000 030555. Best of luck. Bob
I am moderate and that is what I was told too. I am doing just fine. Let us know how you get on

Hi thankfully it was explained to you. I was just told to quit smoking. No meds no advice/help no leaflets. I still don't know any scores from test only that i have. Half lung function on both and got emphysema and RBILD.
I think there is a bit more to it because when I get a chest infection my mobility and breathing go from mild to mod/severe. So i have been told to stay warm try to stay away from people with infections and do excercise.
My husband has moderate/severe COPD and we were told the same by the Doctor but he did add that he would get older! So infact the COPD hasn't progressed massively but he is older and I personally feel if he had kept himself fitter then he would be much better. My advise would be to look after yourself and keep fit! It seems to take a lot more effort with COPD to stay well! Stay away from infections, if you think for one minute you might be getting an infection go straight to the Doctor - my husband thought it would be better if he fought off infections! And actually it doesn't work like that - you need to keep chest infections under control. Good luck, stay well and fit! TAD xx
I was also told mild/moderate COPD & Bronchiectasis and specialist says that as long as no smoking and take medication (Symbicort and nazel steroid) it should stay the same. But my GP says it is still a very serious illness and not to expect to feel any better.
I was fine until Christmas and then got Flu which changed to Chest infection which wouldn't go even after 4 courses of antibiotics. The GP sent me to the specialist, but had already said he thought I had COPD. Has anyone else developed this so fast?
Yes, similar to me. I stopped smoking and then caught chest infection a year later when I was diagnosed. Now 5 years since. Have done one course of pulmonary rehab, 2 years ago and now on 2nd course as have had 4 exacerbations in short space of time....it does seem that wind, cold, and bang off we go again...and anyone with a cold, do not go near, but not always possible to live in a bubble....Exercise yes, but where????
thank you all so much for the positive feedback i dont feel as worried now the doctor did explain the lung does decline with age with people without copd not to smoke again and the lung will decline with age as it would do normally and to eat a good diet excercise keep away from infections if possible and i could live for many many years
The good thing is you've been made aware of it whilst it's still in the mild stage, just to add a lit bit to what as already be said, if you continued to smoke your lung function would decline upto three times faster than it you stopped. I was dx over five years ago with mild copd and my lung function is the same if not slightly better now, i stop smoking soon i was told ( due to being scared to death )do as much exercise as you can and hopefully you will be ok any live for many more years.
Kind regards
Warren
I had a chest infection last winter and cough went on for about 2 months, bringing up clear liquid. Doctor sent me for chest x-ray, which came back to GP and had a note in small print at the bottom, "possible early stages of COPD" . GP said this was nothing to worry about and needed no action. Since then the cough cleared up and I have been well and active with no problems. I have never smoked in my life and to my knowledge have not had contact with asbestos or anything else. However, my parents were smokers and I remember travelling in smoking carriages on trains and in buses, restaurants, pubs etc for the first 18 years of my life, so maybe this has caused mild COPD. I am not sure if my GP is correct in ignoring it for now though. I have started exercising twice a week at a gym and I walk a lot, so hopefully this will help it stay mild. Does anyone know if COPD gets worse gradually, even with exercise, diet and medication when required?
