Lung rehab

This week I am joining the Pulmonary rehab course. I have done it a few years ago but at that time I had only mild COPD and I was careless about the excercises and the diet. It didn't apply to me only to those sick people over there.

This time I am going to take it a lot more seriously. I don't ever want to feel the way I felt in the past month.

Good luck second time around experience will help maintain exercise when the course finishes, keeping the results gained from the efforts.

A few yeaars ago I could walk 12 miles in a day, ride my bike, rush a round the house doing the house work and running up and down the stairs in the department stores. None of these things can I do comfortably now. And tired I get so tired by the end of the day. Its all over for me by 8pm although I do get up very early. I was told ever time I have an event such a chest infection my lungs will deteriorate and I have had several this winter.

Cheers

I finished a course of Pulmonary rehab few months ago, have been very sloppy just lately and stopped doing exercises and keeping weight down, now paying for it by feeling not so good and things a lot more effort. Have decided have to get on track as have to go back for another course late summer.

Completely symjpathise with you hannamac.

My husband starts his first course this Wednesday. I am going to make sure he (me too) listens to everything and does everything recommended . thanks to everyone who commented.

The basic theory of the course is 'Use it or lose it.' Doing stuff rather than sitting down which will render lungs useless. Gentle excercise increasing as the weeks go on build stronger muscles and expand the chest . Best of all is is the comeraderie that builds up with the other rehabers.

Its not enough to do it just in class homework needs to be repated everyday to maintain good health.

Good luck, I am starting my class on Wednesday, not sure what to expect, but everyone on here has good things to say about it

I recently did the rehab course, it was the best thing I did, the exercises were good but I couldn't enthuse about doing them at home. I bought a dvd on line Be alive and be active, its still in the wrapper I will use it soon. The rehab itself came at a good time for me I had just lost my husband after a two and a half battle with cancer and it got me out of the house. I think the company was medicine for me. Anyway today my consultant discharged me so I must be doing something right.

From my experience I don't think it is enough to think I did the course got the T shirt and the video now I am well enough to go back to my old ways (which is what I did last time) Because here I am worse of than the first time. I must remeber the motto 'Use it or lose it'

So I am off right now to see how I can get back on track and not fall off the wagon again

Cheers

Hello everyone,

It's great to read the positive comments about Pulmonary Rehabilition from everyone, including family, friends and carers, and really interesting to read how important it is to keep practicing what you've learnt after the course finishes. It's not always necessary to repeat a course to conitnue the benefits of peer-support, education and exercise. he British Lung Foundation Breathe Easy groups and respiratory exercise instructors provide this support.

Find your local BLF Breathe Easy group and your local respiratory exercise instructor here:

blf.org.uk/InYourArea

If there isn't one in your area, you can ask your PR team to refer you to the local gym for specialist exercise on referral.

Keep it up!
