Steroid joys

Crazy_plant_lady profile image

I had an asthma attack on Friday and refused to accept any help or go to A and E. I couldn't breathe on Saturday, sats stable but peak flow right down. Prescribed steroids and antibiotics but out of hours thought it might not be asthma because of lack of wheezing which I rarely get.

Anyway this was all brought on by damp and mould at work. Is it normal to be so tremory and have palpitations alllllll day? I haven't actually had to have any salamol today for the first time in a while so steroids must be working but jeez.

What is the dose of steroids? Were you seen by a doctor? Sounds like a bad attack. Pred makes me very jittery. And when combined with nebs my heart pounds like crazy.

It's 40mg a day for 5 days. It was horrible and really I should've taken action differently and not just gone off my sats 🫠

Its probably the steroids, I get the same with them & sleep is non existent. Tge only way I can get round it is to take them @ 5am with an oatcake or two then go back to sleep, thus way the nights are so much more bearable. You may want to speak to your pharmacist or gp to make sure. P

peege For those of us on steroids for adrenal insufficiency, the usual advice from other patients is to do pretty much what you are doing - taking the first dose of the day 30-60 minutes before getting up so that it gets absorbed and becomes available prior to getting up.

If sleep is a problem earlier in the night, particularly around 3am, you might want to consider splitting your dose so that you take two smaller doses per day rather than just one bigger dose. Talk to your doctor/pharmacist if you haven't tried this before.

My worst triggers are damp and mould, so why is there this at your work, can you not sort that? I live in an old cold and damp house and am regularly demoulding bits. I know when I start wheezing there's mould somewhere near, could probably get a job as mould sniffer-outer! 😂 If you're stuck working in that atmospere, would wearing a mask help? Hope you can improve your situation soon. 🤞

I might look into it. A pipe burst in the roof and I pointed out the damp spreading across the ceiling but nothing was done for several days. I'm now worried I'll be in a disciplinary meeting for my amount of sickness, and I might have to get a union rep involved which is annoying but necessary I think

yes, do get your Union rep involved. Your company is seriously damaging your health!
