Does anyone here take medication to reduce blood pressure, while also taking asthma meds? Are there counter-indications, and can you control both at the same time?
I am on montelucast, 2mg pred, Trimbow and Xolair. My BP is 155/100 at all times, sometimes higher; it only drops after exercise. I wonder if some of symptoms I percieve as asthma/inflammation-related -- shortness of breath, chest tightnessm, blurred vision -- can be explained by high BP as well. Most of the time, these symptoms respond to the rescue inhaler and prednisolone, but in some cases they do not, and I wonder if it's due to BP. I am also a caffeine fiend.

Hi, good question I shall await your replies runcyclexcski, . Recently it came up that Atvorstatin shouldn't be taken with a BP med (amlodipine I think). I do take Atvorstatin but fortunately my amlodipine was changed to Ramiplril a few months ago - I take those two at bed time with Fostair and Carbocysteine but montelukast after supper.
I'm thinking my bedtime reading will be the Ramiplril & montelukast leaflets 😬
And a very happy new year to you too! Let me know what she says won't you. Would it help if you took the montelukast at a different time of day so it has less effect on your nights? I'm glad it helps with your breathing though. I would have to choose the BP med (fairly recently px) over Montelukast, as a history of of stroke in the family. Take care, P
my Asthma consultant asked my GP to change Ramipril to something different - because it’s renowned for causing the ‘Ramipril Cough’ - which can be hard on those with asthma.
I took Ramiplril for years with Atvorstatin without any interection at all peege - I don't take Ramipril anymore as it drove my BP down to far. I take Ramapril with my heart drugs which can lower BP with no real problems.
Yes symptoms could be due to BP.i would keep record of BP+ Symptoms and take to gp .I'd get an appointment soon if u can.i take indapamide for bp+ bisoprolol for arrythmias, with no probs with asthma meds x
My GP first treated my hypertension with amlodipine, but that gave me water retention, so was switched to ramipril. My asthma consultant advised against ramipril as it's a calcium channel blocker, as is amlodipine, and can aggravate asthma symptoms. Both kept my BP under control but gave me an asthma cough.
Asthma consultant recommended losartan potassium, which isn't as affective, but doesn't affect my asthma.
I have to be super careful with most things in the LAMA inhaler family (Spiriva, Trimbow, Trelegy) and Prednisolone as they send my BP soaring. I did find Eklira Genuair, which didn't affect my BP, but it gave me glaucoma.
Weight control and exercise have proven to be the best treatment for my high BP.
Hi Poobah -- I fully agree re: the effect on exercise on BP. Today I managed to nordic ski for about 20 min, after which the BP was down from 155-100 to 125-78. But outdoor exercise is problematic for my asthma, I have to get drugged up before doing it, and to take numerous air-warming/purifying masks, scarves which makes the whole experience miserable.
Good morning! Just wondering if you'd experimented with coming if the caffeinated coffee for a while and using decaf instead to see if there's an effect on your BP?
Well, I've come off coffee before for a year, but the high BP was still there anyway. Coffee is one of few things I have left to enjoy in life so I went back to it.
Cause I'm on prednisolone long term I have high blood pressure. I'm on Amlopodine and Ramipril. I'm on a lot of medication including Montelukast, Uniphyllum, Spiriva Respimat, Fostair and Salamol and Salbutamol nebules when required.
May I ask how much pred you take daily? I still take 2 mg, and I am paranoid to get off it. I used to take 10 a day, took me 6 months to reduce that to 2 mg...
I first had to see the GP six or so years ago with breathlessness, dizziness, odd collapse and some chest pain. My blood pressure was 150 or so going up to 200 over 100, with out of control heart beats. They thought the symptoms were blood pressure and cardiac related.
It turned out to be blood pressure and asthma. Blood pressure was bought back under control with ramipiril and felodipine and my retiring from work. Asthma is a continuing battle, but when my Asthma is unhappy my blood pressure goes bad.
I have just been referred back to cardiac as my respiratory consultant thinks as well as asthma I have a heart rhythm issue.
So yes for me there is a cross over of symptoms between cardiac, blood pressure and asthma. My hospital has a monthly meeting between lung and cardiac consultants, where they discuss people with crossover symptoms and swap patients. Your hospital might do the same.
Intrestingly, i had that happen "out of the blue" at work 2 years ago. They never figured out what it was. That collapse also costed me my job -- it looked bad on the company's insurance policy, so they "made a difficicult decision" (as they usually say).
Mine had a lone worker and a late working hours policy which nobody followed (it contradicted the pressure to deliver results). When my freak collapse accident happened I was working late and alone, so they found a formal reason.
I have been on Amlodipine and Atvorstatin for years and have no effects from them, Recently developed asthma and use fostair and Montelucast, still no side effects that I can detect.
