I was diagnosed difficult to control astgma in 2018. My asthma had been unsteady over the last couple of years with frequent hospital admissions. 3 within 1 year. I have now been put on to nucala (mepolizumab injections). Does this now mean I have severe asthma.

Hi, Nucala is for severe Eosinophilic asthma. So, yes, you must have this type of asthma to be able to qualify for Nucala. It has strict prescribing criteria. You should try and have a chat with your respiratory consultant to ask them any questions you have. I hope the Nucala works for you.

Like all asthma, definitions are hard to come by. I have been said to have brittle asthma, then it was severe asthma, now it is difficult to control asthma.

When I was, severe, then they could not get control with anything other than prednisone and I was in and out of hospital. Now they have found that having me on fostair mart and alvesco 320, sometimes 640. I rarely need prednisone, but still have very variable asthma. So I am not severe, but difficult to control.

So if you take how they have defined me, you have severe asthma, as they cannot control it by normal means, whereas my asthma they can control by normal means, if only, just about.

That is my theory anyway.

Hi

There is a Severe Asthma Registry that I was asked to enrol on when I was formally diagnosed.

I am not really sure that a name makes any difference but you could ask your team about this maybe?

Good Luck with everything! 😊

HiI assume you have Eosinophilic Severe Asthma?

I also have this and was given Mepolizumab for my EA., but changed to Dupilumab as this also helped with my Sinusitis.

Biologics is amazing and very fortunate to be on them.

Hope all goes we'll taking it...

They told me I have high eosinophils in my blood. First it was difficult to control. Most of my asthma attacks come out of nowhere and don't build up. Ending up on steroids every other months and was in hospital 3x last year. All requiring a nebuliser.

not necessarily, I’ve been on mepolizomab in the past it did absolutely nothing for me , I’ve since been on Benralizumab and now dupilumab..

I was on prednisone 20/30mg every day for 5yrs straight !!

So that in its self didn’t necessarily mean I was severe asthmatic
