Fostair Nexhaler - Side Effects after 2 months?

Hi everyone,

Hope you can advise.

I had asthma when I was in my teens but then it got better, now in my thirties my ashtma decided to come back. It appeared one year, but I was able to manage it by running so no inhaler was almost unnecessary, but sometimes would take the brown. Then had COVID (mild), COVID passed, and after a week of having recovered started to wake really, really tired, eyes burning like if in fire, to the point of just wanting the day to end in order to go to bed. But other days I would be fine, it was like a roller coaster.

During the night I would notice I would wake up gasping for air. Took the brown inhaler but nothing. Went to the GP, that did loads of tests (blood, etc, that all came good) and prescribed me Fostair 100mg (two puffs), and immediately felt the difference and started to sleep much better. Had a few side effects, like hand tremors and heart racing but after a few weeks all improved and I was feeling good.

This was in september last year. This year +- one week after 1st of Jan, started again to wake up tired (not has bad as before) and with a "heavy" head, difficulties concentrating, moody, some nights waking up several times during the night, almost every day having light headaches, eyes burning and recently started to have as well horseness voice.

I understand that some side effects can appear with time, and I've seen people complaining about fatigue, in my case is more a mental fatigue and less physical fatigue let's say.

My question is, can this be the Fostair Nexhaler?

Thank you

I agree with patk 1. I have had issues when my asthma is causing sleep issues, which then make me done in and grotty feeling.Equally I have had issues when changing inhalers making me feel a bit odd.

The helpline nurses are good to talk to and will help you work out a way forward.

Well ended up not contacting them yet, I'm trialing with just one puf in the morning and one at night to see. The horseness got better, and the headaches as well, still a little fatigued but I guess everything takes a little time to make effect. 😊

Hi, this sounds more like sleep apnea than asthma, I would go back to your Dr and ask to be referred for a sleep study. Good luck.

I've no idea what might be causing these symptoms, unless you are under a great deal of stress, but I think it is unlikely to be a side effect of the Fostair. If your GP cannot help, you must insist on seeing a consultant.

Well, some..., moved houses at the end of November where I ended up loosing 4kg with the move (loads of stairs and stress), had to prepare the house quickly to receive family for Christmas. Had some issues during Christmas, and I'm still dealing with issues because of the house (shower leaked, that transformed the house in a contruction yard), plus also other issues from work, etc. It has been never ending really, but still, unless it's because I'm getting old, I never had this before, except back in September and after COVID. Also I suffer from IBS, and I know that I have a tendency to have delayed reactions to medicin (once took penicillin, that took two days for an allergic reaction to appear). Hence I was thinking something related with Fostair specially because of the headaches, but it can be as well a consequence of everything really...

One of my siblings had a bad dose of covid at the start of the pandemic and it resulted in sleep apnoea. The fatigue was brutal. A sleep study had to be done in order to diagnose this and now they use a special machine while sleeping. It's definitely something to consider, given your symptoms.

I would definitely have a chat with the Asthma UK nurses and see your GP. If you continue with your Fostair inhaler, you may find a potassium rich diet will address the tremors and any cramps. Magnesium (high elemental %) can be a good add too. I attach a list of different types and what they're good for.

I hope you get to the bottom of your symptoms and receive the necessary treatment. All the best.
