Salmon v Ventolin

Hi,

I am still using any ventolin I can find including unopened boxes from my mum whom died last year. When I have previously been given Salbutamol it has never worked on an asthma attack and have always ended up being admitted to hospital. For a long time I insisted there is such an obvious difference and I must have Ventolin. As soon as I run out I will inform them only Ventolin. Don't care what they think but I have a history with the hospital.

hi , I’ve had similar… I’ve been using ventolin for over 35yrs .. my gp recently switched me to Salamol … I’ve explained several times that it doesn’t work as well .. but they still refused to switch me back !!

Ridiculous

I'm the opposite. I find salamol works better for me than ventolin!

I switched to the Ventolin DPI some time ago and I'm guessing there is no Salamol DPI because I keep getting told how expensive my inhalers are even thought I rarely use it at the moment

I was switched to Salamol several years ago., without it causing any problems.

Personally, I like salamol. However I use it with a large spacer, which for me means when I am having a severe asthma attack I can still get it into my lungs.

If you need ventolin regularly do you need a medic to review your inhalers.

If you want a fresh point of view ring the helpline on 0300 2225800.

I dont think you should wait until you run out

I wouldn't wait until I ran out to ask for my prescription to be changed to Ventolin. If you think you'll face resistance from your asthma nurse or GP, then definitely talk with one of the Asthma UK nurses on the helpline. The helpline is open Mon to Fri, 9 to 5, on 0300 222 5800.

Hi, thanks for replying everyone. I meant U will be informing them when there are 2 inhalers left. I pay National insurance as with everyone and we are entitled to receive the prescription item that is most effective for us.

Sad to say, but I think the medical profession sometimes forgets that the object of the exercise is to improve the health of the individual patient, and not adopt a “one size fits all “ approach. Some treatments suit some people better than others, and there should be more recognition of this.

I prefer Salamol as it fits better in my pocket with the Atrovent - Can't say I have noticed any difference. I think people don't like having their meds changed. I was not pleased when took of Combivent and given Atrovent and Ventalin.
