Inhaling distilled water via nebuliser, question

I wanted to ask the following -

I attempted to use cool steam inhalation via a handheld nebuliser today to see if it would help my sinuses/polyps. I only used distilled water (stored at room temperature) however as soon as I started to use it the mist caused me to cough for some reason it seemed to irritate the back of my throat I just couldn’t tolerate it even for seconds. I had a Google and noticed that they used to use this as a test (distilled water inhalation) and it triggered wheeze in asthmatics but not non asthmatics

I don’t have confirmed asthma so why would this occur, is this a normal reaction? I am wondering it suggests my airways are hypersensitive.

I am fine with normal steam for example normal boiled water.

Sounds like osmotic shock to me (cells when placed in distilled water swell, it's a known phenomenon in biology). Is this an approved type of therapy?
