Inhaling distilled water via nebuliser, question

I wanted to ask the following -

I attempted to use cool steam inhalation via a handheld nebuliser today to see if it would help my sinuses/polyps. I only used distilled water (stored at room temperature) however as soon as I started to use it the mist caused me to cough for some reason it seemed to irritate the back of my throat I just couldn’t tolerate it even for seconds. I had a Google and noticed that they used to use this as a test (distilled water inhalation) and it triggered wheeze in asthmatics but not non asthmatics

I don’t have confirmed asthma so why would this occur, is this a normal reaction? I am wondering it suggests my airways are hypersensitive.

I am fine with normal steam for example normal boiled water.

Hi bulefrost23 first to say I'm on electric nublizer and I use medication on it subutmol 2.5mg everyone knows that's to open your airways and about your nublizer my belive is to either get a sterilize water or hot water if that doesn't help you need to contact your GP and Confirm if you do have astma or before as all depends how bad is your breathing my friend can you walk or run do you get out of breath do you need subutmol that's 1st medication of astma. I hope that helps take care and good luck

Sounds like osmotic shock to me (cells when placed in distilled water swell, it's a known phenomenon in biology). Is this an approved type of therapy?
