Hi All, I've had asthma for around 45years now and have had inhalers both brown and blue for 43yrs. In the last 6yrs I've been suffering with an irritated throat with a lot of white patches and the odd red spot or thread like lines on the roof of my mouth and back of my throat. I also suffer from tinnitus, which is high pitched and I think related to how sore/raw my throat is. Taking Paracetamol constantly seems to help but don't feel I should be taking these all the time. I have been for a camera down the throat to check for cancer but that came back clear, but they did say I had acid reflux so I'm now on Lansoprazole but that's not helping. So I'm wondering if this is caused by my inhaler, (currently using Fostair). Has anyone else suffered from this and found anything that helps? Thanks in advance

Sore Throat and inhalers
White patches and sores sounds like oral thrush to me. If it is, your GP can supply you with some liquid (name escapes me) that you swish around your mouth to get rid of it.
Yes, my daughter and I have both experienced this with this drug. I stopped taking it as other problems too but i know to help prevent it use corsodyl anti bacterial mouthwash straight after, also wash the device before and after use, plus probiotics might help, The side effects are oral thrush pharmacist or gp can prescribe canestan for this or gp can prescribe something else, It's quite easily treated and nothing to worry about. If it recurs and is troublesome, see if gp can swap for one with less side effects.
great hope it helps
I think it’s easy to become dehydrated too and this can cause several issues like furry tongue and white patches. Salt water mouth rinse is soothing, gargling and spitting out if you can.
Dr or pharmacist knows best
having reflux almost always means that you have to change the way eat ,what you eat and when you eat. Resolving that can make a huge difference.
Thanks for replying. Could you let me know where to find out more about changing the way I eat, what I should eat and when to eat please. As I do feel that might make a difference. Thanks
hi. I can only tell you what worked for me Alikatte. I eat smaller portions and I eat more slowly. I don’t eat processed foods or take aways. I eat fresh vegetables and fruits with a protein such as poached salmon, eggs or chicken or beef. I eat rye bread with whole meal or spelt. I do not eat any dairy products whether they are from a cow or a goat. I eat sauerkraut every day ( easy to make and cheap too!) and I make my own vegetable soups and add olive oil after cooking so it’s not cooked. My Gastrologist advised eating a couple of primes a day and a teaspoon of linseed oil in the mornings. Basically, I eat foods that come as they are. No crisps or sweeties. If I want a treat a have a Booja Booja vegan chocolate. I use oat milk In decaf tea and coffee or as a drink sometimes. I sip water through the day to keep hydrated, no fizzy drinks or artificial sweetener. Avoid sugar. These things mean I have virtually no digestive problems now and the problem caused by reflux on my breathing is resolved. That’s my story but basically it’s changing foods that most people struggle to digest for foods that are more nutritious and easier on the digestive system. Increasing the friendly bacteria in the gut and reducing the bacteria that causes problems. The sauerkraut feeds tbe friendly bacteria well.
Nystatin is what you want for oral thrush. Excellent stuff
Hi Alikatte123
This does sound like oral thrush. In addition to Nystatin and live yoghurt for treating this there is something else that you can do to try prevent thrush…. Has your inhaler technique been checked? Oral thrush is due to inhaled corticosteroids and all inhalers ( except one - Alvesco) with inhaled corticosteroids can cause this due to the drug deposits in your throat. That happens due to poor technique. So if you are using a pressurised inhaler you could ask your doctor to prescribe a spacer. In either event it’s worth getting your inhaler technique checked by someone trained to do this.
There is a very good website with inhaler technique videos that show how to use all the different devices - rightbreathe.com & Lung&Asthma also have videos.
I know you probably are, but remember it’s so important to rinse your mouth thoroughly after using your inhaler, every time. Especially the brown one. Failure to do so can lead to oral thrush. Hope you improve soon.
I suffer from oral thrush with inhalers I got some oral probiotics and a tong scraper cleared it up great so I carry on using them not every day as can be expensive I wear dentures too when I use inhaler I rinse my mouth out and run my dentures under the tap. Doing this is keeping it at bay. I also have LPR silent reflux I use gaviscon advance for this mainly at night as I cannot take PPI meds.
Nystatin is very good for the thrush (white patches and tender tongue). I also sometimes get little blood type blisters on roof of mouth I think it is all connected.
two days on luforbec and my throat is closing and voice terrible
i was ok on fostair
Maybe it is time to have a change of inhaler as there are known issues with fostair, also you have been on it for some time. Our bodies change too over time and a review of your medication maybe a good move. I hope you get some help soon. 🤗
