Pseudomonas Infection

Has anybody been diagnosed with pseudomonas lung infection?

Yes, I had it for about 5 years. Seems to have gone for now. IV antibiotics and two weeks in hospital every few months!

I haven't personally but this bacteria is harmless unless you have a weakened immune system then it can be quite nasty and antibiotics are required. Its a bacteria that can be found in soil. I looked after children with cystic fibrosis and pseudomonas was dreaded and took a long time to shift. It thrives in moist environments. Hope this helps

It won’t hurt healthy people, but it most definitely isn’t harmless once it gets into the lungs, or indeed any part of the body.

It’s not quite what you said. I’m just pointing out you don’t need to have a weakened immune system for it to be a serious infection. It’s one of the gram negative bacteria

All gram negative bacterium is dangerous and potentially fatal if you are susceptible to infection/immunosuppressed. Healthy people die from bacterial infection too. Pseudomonas is life threatening in children with cystic fibrosis as I said plus lung issues as you said. Treatment for those poor mites is usually for life and hospital admission for 2 weeks at a time like you. Im sorry you've suffered with this for such a long time.

Yes. I have bronchiectasis and have had confirmed pseudomonas infection in the lungs in the past. Once there I believe it takes up residence and can cause problems when you have an exacerbation of the disease. The only oral antibiotic that's effective is ciprofloxacin.

I was diagnosed with pseudomonas lung infection last July and was treated with 1 month of ciprofloxacin followed by 3 months of colomycin nebs, but since stopping the nebs I’ve had another infection with the same symptoms. My GP has organised a sputum sample, but just concerned as I know it doesn’t always show up when tested.

I have bronchiectasis as well as asthma & have been colonised with pseudomonas for about 10yrs. Before that I’d grown it several times over the previous 10yrs, but it’s very difficult, if not impossible, to eradicate entirely as it’s one of those bacteria which form impenetrable biofilms in the lungs.

However, it can be suppressed, with nebulised antibiotics ie colomycin, and airway clearance to expel infected secretions. I only occasionally need IV antibiotics - a two week course maybe 1-3 times a year.
