Hi, so in December 2019 I was referred to the hospital chest clinic for testing. There they performed an x-ray, spirometry, blood test etc and the doctor who did this mentioned hyperactive airway sensitivity. I didn't receive a letter from the doctor with results - however they put me on the brown inhaler and created an asthma plan for me and have conducted two asthma reviews one in person one over the phone. I have tried ringing the doctor over it but get nowhere "he'll call you back" but never does... and the last time the asthma nurse called I forgot to ask.
So this leaves me wondering if I have asthma or hyperactive airways. Is hyperactive airways treated with inhaler? In the meantime I will be contacting the doctors to find out more

Hyperactive airways can sometimes be used interchangeably with asthma. Or it’s the diagnosis given when still investigating if the individual has asthma (ie it’s suspected but not confirmed yet). It’s most commonly used when describing child’s breathing issues than adults but it’s the same thing. The treatment is the same.
It looks as though treatment for hyperactive airways is the same for asthma; steroid inhaler (brown) and a reliever (blue) inhaler for sudden attacks, if appropriate in the case. As for what causes it...infections, usual allergy triggers (weather, exercise, stress, pet hair, dust etc). HA can be a one off event or last months. But if it continues then a diagnosis of asthma may then be made. You may wish to see a specialist respiratory physiotherapist - your doctor can refer you or you can go private if your doctor is reluctant. Breathing exercises can be beneficial as an add on to your medication.
