Hi

I have asthma and chronic urticaria (and idiopathic angiogram 😅)

For the urti and angi I have fexofenadine 180. I usually have it once a day (as well as for the asthma) however during flares I can have up to 4. Then flares that don’t settle I had had to increase steroids as well. And sometimes I’ll use anthisan (e45 advised but at the time I was allergic to one of the ingredients, but that has now been removed).

I have had xolair in the past (for the asthma but it should do both), however my lungs didn’t have too much improvement on it, and I started having big urti/angi flares afterwards (I think it was a reaction to xolair but the docs disagreed 🤷‍♀️) so it was stopped

I hope this answers your question 😅

Thanks so much for your reply! That great to know. I am on fexofenadine 180mg x 3 a day, montelukast and now also on tranexamic to see if that helps. Did you ever try that? Just started it so I am hoping it works!!

The dermatologist said next line of treatment would be cyclosporine but it wipes out your immune system so I do not fancy that at all! I am wondering why no one has mentioned the injections to me...don’t know if it’s a cost thing?!!

This condition really does drive you mad doesn’t it?! 😫😫

I’m not on montelukast but have tried it in the past (technically for the asthma). I take tranexamic acid prn for my period but thats never had an affect on the flares really (tho I take it with mefanamic acid which can cause issues so maybe they usually cancel each other out... 🤷‍♀️).

For me the urticaria is more minor (the angiodema is much more irritating), and I’m not under dermatology. I had 1 appt at an allergy clinic then was discharged 🤷‍♀️. Mine is normally idiopathic or triggered by contact, animal dander or cold/hot temps (and some meds).

I think with many things there’s a hierarchy. You have to go through all the steps, and prove all the other options aren’t working before you get the biologics.

Hope the mix you’re on works for you! 🤞🏻

Hello both. I am so interested in this as I am suffering a bit, more with urticaria itch than with asthma. During COVID it has been much worse and I have been treating myself rather than bother my GP (phone consultations only). I am on Fostair 100 for asthma, 1x80 Fexafenadine a day, a bit of Eumovate and various moisturisers. Nothing has worked for long. Dare I ask to see a dermatologist? My urticaria, and occasionally angiodema around eyes, is triggered by stress, exercise, being too hot and maybe pollen. One of you mentions e45. I too was allergic to this in the past and wonder what the problematic ingredient was? Thanks.

UPDATE: got blood tests at GP. Not sure which ones but think for thyroid, kidneys and liver function, blood count, diabetes. All fine. E45 is good - for me very soothing and just as effective as an expensive moisturiser I use. I now think it could be an allergy to celery. I’ve eaten it almost every day for lunch since July. I have eliminated it from my diet so we will see what happens.

I am seeing a dermatologist and if you can I would advise you too as well as i do think it’s trial and error with medication to get this under control. I tried so many different creams and nothing worked so it’s upping medication for me as directed by the dermatologist to see if that helps.

My Urticaria right now is also much worse than my asthma too...that’s all fine thank goodness! I hope you get some relief, let us know how you get on 😊

Thanks Sunnydays. A bit of a revelation - I think it could be celery. I’ve eaten it for lunch nearly every day for lunch since July. On the occasions that I’d go for a walk after lunch, I’d come back with hives and angiodema. it put me off exercise. On Saturday I had celery for my evening meal and had a very itchy night. Maybe it’s daft but I’m eliminating it rom my diet and continuing with Fexafenadine.

That’s great you can pinpoint what it is! Def lay off the celery 👍🏻😊

Hi

For me it was lanolin. I’m allergic to sheep, wool and any product with lanolin in 😅. Always have been (gp prescribed e45 for my eczema when i was a baby and refused to believe my mum when She told them I was allergic... she had to prove it apparently 🤦‍♀️). It also shows up in a lot of cheap moisturisers, as well as nivea.

in reply toAngC

E45 has lanolin in it.

I use Aveeno products which work wonders, recommended by dermatologist friend. I told my daughter-in-law to try it for my grand daughter who has bad eczema and nothing seemed to work apart from steroids. She hasn't looked back since she started using Aveeno. My other grandchildren with dry skin/eczema now use it too.

Just one other question...did you ever try cyclosporine? The dermatologist said that’s next line of treatment but I m wary of taking that! 😳

Have you tried diet yo see if it helps? I have a histamine disorder & food / smells can trigger my hives plus stress. Keeping histamine in good low helps and if I have a bad flare up high levels of lysine quell it. If that doesn’t work American Benedryl (can’t remember the drug name).

Ketotifen is a mast cell blocker that helps some people’s hives...

I’m on lots of meds but the above seems help most

I suffer from asthma, eczema and urticaria I take fexofenadine one to two times a day for all of them which helps Plus chlorphenamine (piriton) up to 3 times a day and antihistan cream which is amazing for urticaria as it stops the itching I also have zero base cream but don’t know if it helps urticaria as I take it for eczema I also started xolair injections which I take for my asthma but I know they are also used for severe urticaria too. Hope that helps

Have you seen any improvement with the injections yet?

I have a bit but not fully I have gone from 2/3 admissions a month to only one but they said it can take between 6-12 months for a full improvement

I have asthma, eczema and urticaria. I take symbicort and montelukast for asthma and anti-histamines for urticaria.

I have a friend who suffers with this skin condition. She has found great relief by using Palmers Cocoa Butter moisturiser.

It’s worth a try.
