Spiriva and blurred vision

Hi everyone

I'm giving Spiriva another go out of sheer desperation of using high courses of Pred for the last 6 months, been on it 2 days and although I think it's helping I keep getting blurred vision in one eye. Tried getting in touch with the hospital for advice but no reply yet, anyone else had this symptom?

Hi

Try ringing your GP or talking to your pharmacist, until you hear back from the hospital, but you probably should stop it. Blurred vision is an associated side effect of spiro a which can increase the pressure in your eye and cause ‘acute narrow-angle glaucoma’.

If you can, speak to someone tomorrow (GP etc) before stopping it but I should imagine that’ll be the advice they’ll give...

Hope this helps

It might be well worth getting an appointment with your local ophthalmic optician who can check out the pressures in your eye and will know where to refer you if there is a problem. They have a much greater knowledge of eyes than your average doctor.

You said you’re giving Spiriva another go. Does this mean you had it before and stopped taking it? I first had Spiriva a little over two years ago. After a few months I stopped taking it because of various effects I felt were caused by it. I started it again in February of this year but stopped taking it a few days ago because I’ve been having various effects including blurred vision but that wasn’t one of the things I’d connected to taking the inhaler. However, yes I have got blurred vision. Hopefully this will clear up by itself. I hope yours will too.

Yes I tried it a few years ago and it made me cough but it did help my asthma but it's only no w the blurred vision has started I remember I had it last time and that's why I stopped it! Just tried it again out of sheer desperation as getting fed up of the steroids I have to keep taking. I've still got it a bit today and I haven't taken it since Sunday! Think on balance I'll keep off it.

I was on Spiriva but it gave me hypertension and therefore thumping headaches and nausea. My optician picked up the hypertension during a regular eye test and set in motion my treatment for high BP and a change from Spiriva to Eklira Genuair. I've had a much better experience with EG and it really helps my asthma on a daily basis.

Once I looked into Spiriva, I couldn't believe the reviews and numbers of patients who had developed side effects, including hypertension. My GP explained that it's the NHS first choice of LAMA inhalers, but I was lucky that she was happy to go with my choice of Eklira.

interesting to hear this is affecting other people in the same way, will ask about Genuair as it's a new one on me.

Omg poobah the side effects I didn't even think! Was literally just thinking earlier how my nose isn't so inflamed and raw, and hives settling down and few other bits. Then reading this thought wow I stopped spiriva last wed and started it in nov I wonder if this could be my fast heart rate and slightly higher bp?! Funny voice etc. Cant believe I didn't consider the inhaler. Doh 🤦‍♀️

Yes, it affected my voice too. My side effects crept up on me and definitely weren't immediate. At first it made me feel great but that all started to disappear about 3 months in, but I persevered, hoping I would go back to feeling good. Unfortunately, things just got worse.

I know it works for lots of people, but I'm not one of them.
