The brown inhaler won’t help in the event of an asthma attack. But the blue inhaler can be used multiple times. See the asthma UK information here for what to do.

Your nephew should take his brown inhaler as directed whether he is well or ill. It's a steroid medicine and only works long term if taken every day.

This link takes you to Asthma UK page that explains what to do when a child has an asthma attack. You could print it out and have it handy so you can follow the instructions.

More medical advice and monitoring of your nephew's asthma should be carried out by his GP and asthma nurse. It sounds like he needs more help with his asthma in order to avoid more asthma attacks.

The brown one should alway be used even if your nephew feels well as that is the preventer. The blue inhaler can be used more than once when unwell and also when having an asthma attack. It sounds like your nephew needs a review of his asthma, he should also have an action plan for his asthma. I also would suggest that you or his parents phone asthma UK nurses on the helpline on 0300 2225800 which is Monday until Friday 9am until 5pm they are very knowledgeable and friendly.

It sounds like he is very lucky to have you. How sad to lose his parents when he is so young. The nurses at Asthma UK are amazing so please talk to them too. I would be booking him in for an asthma review as soon as possible too.
