Cetirizine or Loratadine?

Hi!

I had a bad insect bite 12 days ago, I’ve taken hydrocortisone and antibiotics for a week. The itching is driving me crazy. Doctor just prescribed Eumivate and told me to take either cetirizine or loratadine.

I’m on my way to the chemist. Would you choose one over the other? Is one brand better than the other?

Thank you!

My brother in law reacts badly to insect bites and stings. He takes Piriton. While you are in the chemist I would get some hydrocortisone 1% cream. I react to strong sunlight and some metals. Itches like crazy, but hydrocortisone cream settles it nicely for me.

It's really just a personal thing. The 2 you mention are similar drugs.

Loratidine is supposed to be less drowsy than centreline.... only slightly as they are both generation 2 antihistamines

Cetrazine works best for me but like others have said it’s each to his own .You can buy specialised cream for bites and stings too which help with the itchy ness .id talk to the pharmacist he’ll recommend what’s best for you to use x

I use cetrizine......just a generic one ......I have used Loratadine too. Both work. I also use Eurax anti itch cream. This has no hydrocortisone in it and I find it equally effective. Worth a try.

If you want one that doesn't make you drowsy I would say loratadine(used to be known as clarytin).

I used to to take this for my hay-fever for quite a while until dr change and put me on a stronger one. Used to bit on it for many years found it good. Dr decided with all my allergies I'm getting she thought i would be better on astronger one that only reason I was changed.

If ypu drive or use machinery loratidine would be better for you.

I prefer cetirizine, but also use Eurax. Loratadine didn't work for me. I buy generic or galpharm brand from Lidl, Aldi, or The Range.

I prefer Cetirizine - can't remember why though both can make you drowsy whatever the pharmacistsays. I often take half of one to help me stay asleep during the night.

Same drugs but way cheaper are usually 'Allergy Tablets from Sainsbury et al.
