Newly diagnosed with mild Asthma I would like any advice on sleeping as I often wake up during night struggling for breath. My inhaler helps.

You may benefit from taking your inhalers before you retire to bed. Don't sleep on your back, side sleeping is easier on the lungs. And don't eat too late.

In some cases nasal drip can irritate the respiratory system while lying down OR it may be acid reflux, which is also an irritant. But these are only possibilities and are treatable.

You need to see an asthma nurse for a more comprehensive review so that you can explore resolutions to your disturbed sleep.

Very helpful. Will try and stay on side. I am due to see a nurse when I return my finished Peak Flow Meter. Will mention your comments.

Hi, I was also wondering if you have a preventer - I assume the one which helps is your blue reliever inhaler?

Waking at night/difficulties breathing at night is a definite warning sign that your asthma isn't controlled, so it's definitely worth contacting your GP/asthma nurse asap to discuss your symptoms and medication. If you don't have a preventer you probably need to be on one.

As with the others who responded I really appreciate your comments. Didn't know of a preventor. Will make a point of asking my nurse.

Many thanks for your helpful response. Yup it's a blue inhaler I have. Will enquire about the preventor.

I've been using air purifiers in my bedroom for years and find they really help. If you get one make sure it's got the British allergy seal of approval. I also use 3 pillows to keep my head and upper back up, been doing that since I was a child. This also helps if acid reflux is a problem. Vicks also helps me when my asthma's bad.

I should also add that while I find Vicks helps me, it can also make asthma a lot worse as it can irritate the airways, so probably best avoid. Probably psychological for me.
