Severe Asthma and Pregnancy

Hi

I am nearly at the end of my first trimester for having my first baby which I am over the moon about! I haven’t posted in ages but since last time I have started on xolair injections and more new medication, but have had no hospital admissions and a massive reduce in attacks and symptoms - it’s so great to feel more normal. I was told by my gp and consultant all my medication is fine and to keep taking it as normal. At my last injection appointment I was told I could no longer have xolair untill after the birth. I have since got an appointment with consultant to discuss wether it would be more appropriate to continue with my xolair injections throughout the pregnancy and that we will discuss pros and cons. My asthma nurse said they have injected a lady throughout pregnancy before but she had to sign forms ect and in the end all was ok. There have been no trials in the drug xolair in pregnancy and that is why it’s a difficult thing to decide. I have tried googling to see but I can’t find much in the UK. I know it is a long shot but has anyone else had xolair injections while pregnant or stopped them ect?

Would appreciate any advice as the hospital seem to be keen on my opinion on wether I’d still like to carry on with my injections or not.

Thankyou

I’m also on xolair. One of things before starting it they said to me, was are you thinking I’d getting pregnant because If so there’s still limited research but there is a ever growing number of people taking it whilst being pregnant & it being fine & not being harmful.

It might be worth seeing if your team can reach out to other hospitals to see if other places could give you advice / have had experience with this

Thankyou for your response. It’s good that you had that discussion and I hope your xolair treatment is working well for you. I am going to give my nurse a ring in the morning and ask that, Thankyou for your suggestion - I never even thought of that. X

Tens of thousands of women have had healthy births on Xolair. My doctors (in the states and France) have all agreed it's more important for the mother to be healthy and able to breathe than to risk going off it- (We were trying to get pregnant for awhile while I was on it).

I'm in a Xolair Facebook group with a lot of women who were on it while pregnant nursing, too-

Good luck! Congrats on the little one:)

Hi

I have not had those injections, but just wanted to say that my asthma was much worse than usual during my second pregnancy and the advice from my respiratory consultant was that you need to be getting enough oxygen in your body for your baby to be well. If the injections help your asthma then it is probably worth continuing them, if there aren't any alternatives that will work that have been tested and deemed safe during pregnancy. However you will probably struggle to find anything that is deemed safe as they just don't like testing anything on pregnant women understandably.

It doesn't mean that the drugs are unsafe, just not tested.

Take care. All the best for the birth xx

Thankyou so much for this advice and your well wishes, you are right that I will struggle to find anything 100% safe. X
