Deepening of voice

Hi, this is a little bit of a strange problem, I have irritable airways/ cough variant asthma. I’m taking symbicort, montelukast, baclofen, uniphyllin and azithromycin, about 6-8 weeks ago I suffered a nasty sore throat which afterwards resulted in 2 weeks of what I think was laryngitis. Since then my voice appears to have completely changed! It’s quite a bit deeper and frequently croaks and breaks, particularly if I try to raise my voice. I work in a primary school so you can imagine the occasions that require me to raise my voice 😜 (we’re not allowed to ‘shout’) I’m wondering if this has happened due to the virus or is something to do with my meds. Has anyone else encountered this?

I’m sorry if, in the grand scheme of things, this seems petty but any advice greatly received.

Hi

If you have been on these meds for a while it is unlikely that they are the reason for the hoarseness.

However laryngitis can hoover for a while after. After 6-8 weeks its worth speaking to your GP and explaining what’s going on jic you still have a virus or mild infection affecting you. They may want to do a laryngoscopy to see what’s going on, jic you’ve ‘picked up’ a little bit of VCD etc which can also affect how you talk.

Good luck and hope that helps xx

I’ve had no change in meds since November so I did think it was unlikely to be them unless it’s something that can happen time? I’d not heard of VCD but after reading about it it does sound like it!

Thank you for your reply

Hello. My voice got deeper. I was told that it may be down to my inhalers, but just go to see gp to make sure. Hope this helps.

Hi, I've had this, mines LPR. Had the ent done 3 weeks ago. It's a nightmare, I seem to be on the other side of it now but still something in my throat messing with my voice box. Hope it goes back to normal, alot of asthma at times.

Hi Cw70 my voice has changed drastically since becoming asthmatic. I initially had a virus too. I sing and my register has deepened so much so that I am not a soprano anymore. Yes I thought it was petty too but when it changes you as a person it is not petty at all. I have had to make so many changes to my life so when it happened to me I was in denial and tried all sorts of home remedies and even went to a voice coach. My voice cracks too and sometimes it goes altogether. I suspect that it is the inhalers (I am on Fostair) but obviously can’t get a definitive answer about this. I have now had to accept it and move forward. Hope you can do the same 🤗🙏

Hi. I have notice quite a change in my voice too. I manage a music service and part of that sometimes involves teaching singing in primary classrooms and it’s very disconcerting when the sound comes out all wrong. On the plus side I seem to have a bigger voice!

Personally I think it’s the meds.

I’m on symbicort too and it definitely affects my voice. I try to rinse thoroughly but still experience hoarseness.
