A bit of a random one but have any of you had a massage for sore muscles post-attack/flare?
I’m just coming out the other end of a nasty flare that’s lasted a few weeks but as you can imagine, I’m so sore and achy from my neck to my hips. I’m aching in muscles that I never knew existed haha! I feel like I’ve aged 30 years and want my old spritely body back so am wondering whether a massage would be useful (it may not even be sensible but wanted to ask)?
Thanks in advance!

Osteopathy can really help with the aches and pains brought on by asthma issues (I am one so tooting my own profession 😉). In attacks you tend to over use accessory muscles, so having it looked at and worked through and definitely help you hurt less! We also can use a variety of techniques so if you find 1 thing too difficult/painful you just say and they can use something different to do the same job!
I wouldn’t suggest doing when acute (cause they’d just look at you and tell you GP/hosp depending on the level of SoB) but post issues we can help with. I see a few patients with resp conditions (asthma, copd, bronchiectasis) and they all feel better/less tight and sore after treatment.
Alexander technique is useful to look at. It is a method whereby you can begin to look at ways to improve the way you use your muscles.
I can present theories. Doctors can present theories. The reality is we need to investigate ourselves to determine if something is worthwhile to pursue.
A lot of asthmatics have tight rib muscles and raised shoulders. Things which reduce breathing efficiency and produce stress on the breathing system. By changing this you can reduce the stress on the breathing system and as a result reduce the probability of going over the stress breakdown point for the breathing system. This is a theory for you to investigate.
I know exactly what you mean! Back, shoulders and neck are always tight and knotted after a bad flare! I’m going for a massage on Thursday and that helps me.
Oooh, I hope you feel better after your massage! Back in the day I would have slapped on some Deep Heat but I’m pretty sure it would finish me off these say...haha.
Definitely! I used to have them (less well off now not working) and they really helped. I was going anyway for sore back, neck & shoulders and the lady would put a drop or two of rosemary oil in my oil mix. Obviously we can't take strong smells so testing is in order.
It also helped me with the lymph drainage element to help get rid of accumulated toxins.
Treat yourself, you're worth it 😜
PS Pilates is good too, it's ongoing of course. I go to classes with a very good trainer, always feel better after a session
Never thought about osteopathy help after an episode, can see it could be really useful particularly if experienced a lot of coughing. Thanks for suggestion Mrs CMK and advice Emma
