Hi, just been to the doctors for 2nd time with very painful foot. Dr cannot decide if it us gout, bunion or arthritis. what ever it is very painful! However Dr tells me that as I have asthma I shouldn't take iboprufen. Paracetamol is not strong enough, but when I asked what should I take he suggested I ask a pharmacist. Pharmacist could only give me 3 days worth of lowest dose possible of cocodamol and said if I need more I would have to go to doctors. (Try getting an appointment!) Round and round in circles. Any one know why I shouldn't take iboprufen? And are there any other over the counter remedies? Any help appreciated

I suffer asthma and gout !

Doctor is correct about ibuprofen, it can trigger an asthma attack .

Gout typical presents as inflammation of the first joint of the big toe ( this joint is in the foot ) . In my case I was prescribed prednisolone , which worked fine . What I do know is that with gout the inflammation needs to be reduced as quickly as possible to minimise damage to the joint .

Thanks for this, Dr gave me prednisone but it did not cure the problem, hence arthritis or union possibly. Just not sure what to take for the pain.

One other thing about gout , it is triggered by certain foods . One culprit is dried pulses . Mine was kicked off by eating cheap tinned peas - which are made from reconstituted dried peas .

Many pain killers have an affect on the breathing mechanism that is detrimental. So a person with no breathing problems can tolerate a higher dose than someone who has asthma.

For foot see a sports therapist. They may provide solutions that doctors are ignorant of.

A podiatrist would know something about feet. A sports therapist would know something about getting muscles working. There is a difference.

Hi, I have suffered with foot pain for a couple of years!! Pain is in base of toes, on foot pad around my ankles and heels and my toes go in to spasm. Pain also runs along the outside of my foot.

I have been prescribed gabapentin for this which works great for the pain but I hate how it makes me feel the next day.

My gp prescribed amitryptiline but when I got an appt with the orthopaedic consultant he said it was nerve pain I had and changed it ti gabapentin.

I hope you get sorted out soon cause foot pain is sore

See a McTimony chiropractor. There may be able to do something effective.

The orthopaedic consultant is at the top of tree. However, if you do a bit of investigation you will find he has no knowledge of muscle behaviour and how muscles can cramp on nerves to cause pain and discomfort. Orthopaedic consultants pass work onto physios and have very little knowledge and experience about long term processes. The experience tends to be with physios and NHS physios tend to be one size fits all.

I was told that ibuprofen is generally not recommended for asthmatics due to it being a possible trigger. However, I do and can take it without problems, I have been told that as I didn’t have any problems with before being diagnosed with asthma - it’s probably still on for to take it now (dr, asthma nurse and pharmacist all said the same).

I’m not in anyway medically trained etc.

Thank you.I did take some ibrufen before I saw the Dr. With no ill effect.So will perhaps use sparingly and with caution until problem solved.

I also was fine with ibrufen but have been told it’s now a no go with the medicine regime I’m now on as there’s a higher risk attached now .I take fostair 100 2 puffs twice daily ,Spiriva and montelukast

Hi, ask the Dr to check Urate levels in blood. If this is borderline or high then it will be gout if its normal then it likely not.

Like many I have no probs with ibuprofen but always take food with it

Is the pain in your big toe joint? If so just a thought, I had terrible pain there, nothing stopped it, even ibuprofen which I can take. I discovered it was Gluten intolerance! It's all to do with inflammation. My toe is almost back to normal, plus the back of one knee and both thumbs! Very odd but true.
