Feeling ill again just after having pneumonia.

Hi all, wondering if anyone else has had similar issues, had left lung pneumonia over 2 weeks, first week very sick and on antibiotics for 10 days, about 5 days ago started to feel better and a little energy returning etc and thought I was on way to recovery ... went into work this Monday night and Tuesday (work in busy bar 8hr shifts finish 3am) felt weak and body when I rested was vibrating, thought this might be exhaustion. Today Wednesday cough worse than last 5 days and feel so weak and ill, also not sure if I feel like a temperature is returning.. has anyone else had a relapse (not sure if that’s what’s happening 😳). Thanks in advance for any info/thoughts xx

You can get relapses, or it may be a new infection. If the first infection hasn't completely cleared, it can come back. If it had completely cleared, your immune system is probably weakened allowing another infection in. It takes awhile to recover from a bad chest infection. As adults, we always push ourselves too soon, but you need to make sure to get rest. I'd go back to the GP. Don't let it linger. Your perfectly within your rights to ask the GP to listen to your chest to see if the infection has cleared. Good luck and I hope you feel better soon. x

Hi, thank you for your reply, I was hoping it’s not another infection, but as day is going on not feeling any better I was trying to avoid going back to to the Drs, but think it’s probably the best way to know for sure. Again thanks 😊

I had right lung pneumonia in September, I was the same as you, started to feel better after a couple of weeks then had a relapse, I have since had recurrent relapses almost every 6 weeks since, I just don’t seem to be able to shake it, I’ve had umpteen tests to work out why I can’t shake it and they all come back clear for whatever they have tested me for, even spirometery came back clear, chest X-rays are the only thing that’s showing any evidence of anything, the oncologist has looked at every X-ray to check it for anything sinister and every time it’s negative for anything other than infection, but when it hits it hits hard and within a matter of 24h I go from being pretty well to very sick. Hope you get sorted soon x

Hi thanks for your reply. Oh that sounds awful and so frustrating regarding negative results. I wonder what it is? I do hope it stops for you. This is first time I’ve had pneumonia and yes doesn’t it knock you out 😳. But same here felt getting better for 5 days or so then sick, admittedly not like the first week. Take care XX

Yeah it was my first time ever having pneumonia, at first I thought it was just a simple chest infection but within 36h I’d collapsed and had the paramedics out, I’ve since been diagnosed with asthma but cos my chest infections never settle they are treating with COPD inhalers rather than just asthma inhalers, I’m just starting with year another infection, it just seems like it’s one infection after another this last 8 months, all I can advise is that you need to listen to your body and rest as much as possible, I sleep a lot when I’m poorly with my chest, it’s like my body shuts down and I can’t stay awake, I’ve missed so much time off work it’s a wonder I’ve even still got a job 🙈

I know after any virus or infection my Asthma is bad for a few weeks. My lungs are very sensitive and reactive to minor triggers. I have had severe pneumonia and I was a couple of months recovering. It could be the bar environment is a little smokey. I know we have the smoking ban, but I can react to smokers coming in after just having smoked outside. They are still exhaling smoke. That pneumonia will have really aggravated your lungs, so quite understandable for them to be reactive and sensitive. Weakness after pneumonia is common, it really takes it toll on your body. If this was your 1st couple of shifts back at work, you probably are going to feel it. But if you feel your symptoms are the same as when you had the infection then you need to get checked out. If nothing else it will give you peace of mind. If there is infection brewing you don’t want to leave it until it gets really bad, best to nip it in the bud.
