Go back to the GP for a review, they may add a preventer inhaler (if she is not already on one. If the coughing is affecting your daughters sleep, it may also impact on her behaviour (tiredness, irritability etc). If symptoms persist ask for a referral to a paediatrician.

Hope this helps.

Hi thanks for your reply, iv had her at doctors, she’s been took in to hospital a few times, she’s already on the ventolin blue inhaler, it’s a shame coz she’s up all night till about 5 in the morning xxxx

It definitely sounds like you could do with a specialist assessment. It could be asthma but all sorts of other possibilities exist. Most likely, if asthma medication isn't really working, would be a persistent infection but they might want to do a chest x-ray or maybe some blood tests to try & assess what's going on.

Hi Alison,

How old is your little girl now? Sometimes it helps to take a video of her coughing to show to the doctors. If you took a little bit at different times during the night, it would show them what you and your daughter are dealing with and they might be more proactive. Is the cough only at night?

Dear Alison I have a son who has had the same, it was really distressing. Please please try just for one week to take her off dairy and wheat. My son's cough would, within 3-4 days, completely clear up when I took him off these foods. Once the cough has gone I would allow him back onto them, but ideally in smaller amounts. I know it might sound daunting to take these items out of her diet but it is only for one week. And if it works you will know the cause and can save her a lifetime of prescription medication. I am very happy to give you a list of the alternatives to diary and wheat that my son eats without complaint and they arent expensive.

Please give it a try.

Best wishes,

Anya

She’s had an X-ray when she was in hospital it came back with nothing, it’s only at night, and the cough goes on till abt 5-6 in the morning then it starts to calm a bit, doctors just keep saying she’s to young to test for asthma, she is taking the blue inhaler, she’s only 4 she’s a twin, could you send me some no dairy & wheat thanks alison

Hi Alison The fact that it is only at night sounds exactly like my boy. Every supermarket do their own brand gluten free pasta, usually around £1.20-£1.50 for a bag of it. Do you have a bread making machine? As I find my son can eat spelt bread without problems. But also there are pretty good wheat free breads at most supermarkets. Does your daughter eat cereals in the morning? If you want you could tell me what she eats in a day and I could tell you what I recommend as an similar alternative, or what I think might be the main culprit. But I cant beg you enough to give this a try as I am so sure it will work. Especially when they are young they respond so quickly. I also know a number of adults who have given up dairy and their asthma has gone away. With my son it is just so clear.

Rice dream is a dairy alternative that my son likes alot it is a little sweet which I think helps plus it has added calcium so you can be reassured about the calcium intake. Otherwise there is hemp milk which does a very good impression of cow's milk. I wouldnt use soya milk as soya can be a trigger. There is also almond milk, coconut milk.

i developed adult asthma about 7 years ago its getting steadily worse cough my head off at times particularly when i lie down at night i was seeing one specialist who really did F ALL but every time i went up to see him took 100 and wrote a different prescription try this try that had all tests in hospital x rays asthma test in the box blowing the lot now going to another specialist but cannot get in till june and i have very good health insurance the only thing that gets rid of the cough on a permenant basis is the red little steroids and no real side effects tried pred, singular, montelusk, phylocontin all made me spaced out of my head , throw away all the carpets clean all the bed clothes once a week and wash in over 60 deg , make sure there is little dust in the house , no mould anywhere pull out every thing and check cubbords beds etc , no perfumes sprays , air freshners or or house hold cleaners , no dairy , try to prop her up a little in bed on a few pillows her head in particular , i know a girl who told me her childs asthma is nearly cured since she bought a hepa air filter thing and leaves it going in her sons room thats my next thing to try its that or a sunny dry climate or a dry snow climate dampness is a killer and this winter was crap mould and moss growing every where outside cats or dogs may have to go !!!!!!!!!!

Hi

Can I ask have you tried for one month to give up wheat and dairy completely, (not a trace of it) from your diet? You mentioned no dairy, I am really interested to know whether you have ever given up both and found it help at all?
