Dear Lisa I’ve Checked for You & This is What I’ve Found, Firstly it is Usually Done Under Local Anaesthetic, But is Also Sometimes Done Under General.

Why you have this test

A bronchoscopy is usually carried out under a local anaesthetic. But sometimes you might need to have this test under a general anaesthetic. This allows your doctor to do things that are not possible under a local anaesthetic.

Having bronchoscopy under a general anaesthetic means that the doctor can remove a larger sample of tissue (biopsy) or put a tube (stent) in place to keep the airway open. Your doctor will explain why a general anaesthetic is necessary in your case.

Your doctor puts a narrow, flexible tube called a bronchoscope down your windpipe (trachea) and into your airways. Or they might use a solid metal tube, called a rigid bronchoscope.

Hope This Helps!

Hi

Sorry to hear you’re so worried (and how I’ll you’ve been!)

Haven’t had it myself but they usually do a broncoscopy with a local anesthetic spray into your nose a throat. It makes you drowsy but doesn’t put you to sleep (they give you o2 through the procedure). If you can’t have LA then talk to them and let them know.

I’m about to transfer my care to Addenbrookes, and have met my new cons there. They seem to be really good and take the time to talk through and concerns or worries you have.

Good luck and hope it goes well for you!

Perhaps you could post this question on the British Lung Foundation group as there are several members who have Bronchiectasis (as I have) and more likely to have had this procedure. I've had a Broncoscopy but I was also having a mastectomy at the same time so was under anaesthetic. healthunlocked.com/blf

So do i this is such a huge appointment as my local hospital are at the wits end and have tried everything I have been put into a coma 4 times the last 12 months to save my life the attacks are so quick and this is what we are hoping for answers I also got given a really nasty bacteria through the breathing tube in August which left me with full blown hospital aquired pneumonia and I nearly died it has left me with both bases of lung dead so I think this is why they want to do the broncoscopy and I got diagnosed with eisphillic asthma excuse the spelling as well as brittle asthma and level 2 respiratory failure x
