Hi, I have been on phyllocontyne for a long time, yes they really do help. Please let me know how you get on with them. Take care.

What is it and what is it supposed to do?

Far as I can tell they are to help your airways relax so you can breath easier.

I've been on Phyllocontin for 5 years and I like it. It appears to have both bronchodilator (opens the airways) and anti-inflammatory properties.

Some people have really nasty side effects but for others it works well and they don't get any. It's a slightly old-fashioned drug and seems to be Marmite for both patients and doctors - pre-steroids, theophylline/aminophylline was one of a very small selection of asthma drugs but now of course there's a much bigger selection. I don't seem to respond much to steroids so it's good to have this as an option, though my consultant doesn't like it because of the potential side effects - I have told him I don't have any so he can leave it alone lol as it works for me.

It's worth bearing in mind that people can have very individual responses to this drug which is perhaps why some doctors don't like it - some people have a good response on less than the therapeutic dose, some people get awful side effects on low doses, some people can have enough for an elephant and it does nothing or they have no side effects!

Also worth remembering that the brand really does matter here - you can't mix and match, so don't let anyone switch you from Phyllocontin to another brand (eg slophyllin or uniphyllin) without discussing it. I have always been on this brand but others on here have found they do fine on one but another brand has horrible side effects!

I hope your consultant has told you about the monitoring blood tests? I don't really have these much now but when you start it's good to get them done to check your levels and make sure you're not over/under. They need to be done at the right time as well in relation to your doses. I make sure my doses are roughly 12 hours apart - I'm more careful about this with Phyllocontin than any of my other medications to make sure I don't get too much.

Hi no nothing was mentioned about blood tests. Iv been given 2 weeks supply 1 tablet twice a day 12 hours apart. I'm thinking of staring it. I need to get it done before end of November as im being referred to start xolair.

I think that's the starting dose. I was told to start on that and gradually increase, though it took me a couple of goes and I had to ask them again! I'm now on 2 225mg tablets twice a day. Wish they'd provide more information when they start new medications! They should have told you about the tests but don't always. Maybe ask the Asthma UK nurses?

I'm due to have my annual check with the nurse on the 10th Nov so I'll ask then. Thank
