It triggers breathlessness which passes fairly soon for me. So far I’ve found it mainly with pickles such as onions, capers and cornichons, but more annoyingly with white wine!

I also find it with vinegar containing foodstuffs such as tomato sauce.

Read the labels - these days, allergens are usually printed in bold in the list of ingredients, but not always.

I don’t think it is very unusual, bit I guess it depends how strongly you are affected as to whether you have to avoid completely, or use with caution.

Sulphites are a trigger for me. They are often in dried fruit. Reading the label is all you can do to avoid them at home.

I’m sensitive to sulphites. Sulphites are present in processed meats/ sandwich meats; wines; anything dried, especially fruits; the more likely the food is to turn brown, the more I react -possibly because more sulpher is used? Dried or preserved Coconut. Nuts, ....dried cranberries, plums, so finally I learned to just leave all of these things alone....

A basic migraine food avoidance list includes a listing of sulphites.

I also react to all vinegar, & all forms of yeast & all fermentation & all molds.

Here, canned tomatoes do not need to list vinegar as an ingredient, but I understand that somehow vinegar is used to ripen tomatoes to process them for canning. I’m sensitive enough that any vinegar contact is too much.

On thanksgiving I was rinsing a tray that had held cocktail sauce. I knew vinegar was an ingredient & a problem so I was turned away, rinsing at arms length; that caused an asthma episode for me. Unable to walk, stand, speak, hacking....really quite ill.

Sulphites is also an asthma trigger for me...cook everything from scratch and stick to gin! A lot of alcohol has naturally occurring sulphite that is below the limit that they have to label it and pre cut/prepared bags of veg and salad aren’t labelled but in it’s there too...

You'll find sulphites are also present in diluted juices and cordials, so best to avoid.
