Hi Alexis,

Sounds like you've been through a lot. Some women first develop asthma during or shortly after pregnancy. There are certain times in a woman's life when hormone levels go up and down a lot. It is not known exactly why these hormonal changes affect asthma symptoms, or why they affect some women but not others. One theory is that they may directly affect the airways and/or cause the body to have a stronger inflammatory response to infection, but more research is needed before we can know for certain.

Asthma is a long term condition, there's more information here. bit.ly/2vupr5X

The best way to manage your asthma is to make an appt with your doctor or nurse if you haven't already.

- Take your medication exactly as prescribed and discussed with your GP or asthma nurse.

- Check with your GP or asthma nurse that you're using your inhaler correctly.

- Use a written asthma action plan.

- Go for regular asthma reviews.

Take care,

Dita

Hello Neisiamommy, sending you lots of good wishes. It is hard to have a beautiful new baby and not to be able to do all the things you planned to do.

Any long term illness affects the way we are and the way we live. We have dreams and sometimes we adjust them when they don't work out. You have a lovely baby girl and you were unfortunate to become ill just afterwards. The best things you can do is to find a way to manage the asthma so that it impacts your day to day life as little as possible. Even if you can' t go out so much, enjoying the time you have with your daughter is important. I hope that you have some help to manage day to day?

After the birth of my son I had post-natal depression. I loved my son to bits, but I kept crying and everything seemed wrong. Fortunatley I found help. My GP recognised the depression and my hormones got back to normal with the help of treatment and I started to enjoy life again.

Despression and asthma are not the same illness but having both will make each of them worse. Talk to someone about how you feel as well as getting help to manage your asthma. Both are important. My post-natal depression was many years ago and yes that does get better if you have good treatment and help. The tiredeness from a new child gets better. Asthma with good care - the right treatment - can be managed so that life is reasonably good. So first priority is to talk to someone - GP or Practice Nurse - if your asthma is not controlled. Ask for a referral for additional tests if that doesn't work. Talk to someone about how you feel and get help if you feel depressed.

I wish you and your family all the best. It can take time but it is so worthwhile. Let us know how you get on.

You must talk to someone medical, Neisiamommy. Post natal depression, or anxiety, is a priority area these days. My daughter was diagnosed with Post traumatic stress disorder after childbirth. She saw a very helpful councillor. Please get some help so that you can start to enjoy your baby. She had pre-natal asthma but it gradually settled....for now anyway.

Having a baby is hard work and if you were ill with asthma straight afterwards then you need to make sure that the asthma is being well treated and talk to someone about how you feel. Do you have a Health Visitor, or an Asthma Nurse you can speak to?

It doesn't last forever the way you are feeling. With help you will be able to enjoy your baby. You have spoken to people here, so talk to someone medical who can make sure you get help as soon as possible. For your sake and your baby's. Treating asthma and treating depression are both important and possible so that life is good for you. There is medical help available. There is an organisation called PANDAS which helps women who have depression associated with giving birth. They have a helpline 0843 28 98 401 (open 9am - 7pm everyday). For asthma you can call the Asthma UK helpline 0300 222 5800 (Mon - Friday 9am - 5pm). They can help you talk through how you are and what you need to do to make a difference.

I remember that feeling of being able to do nothing but cry and feeling that nothing would help. It was the Health Visitor who noticed and started to help me get the right help. Each step you take towards getting the right help is a step to being better.

Take care.

Hello, I was in hospital with awful chest infection and wheeze whilst pregnant and afterwards the respiratory consultant said I have pregnancy induced asthma. I couldn't believe it? I felt same as you. It took a while but finally came to terms with the fact that everyday I would have to take my preventer inhaler and when I'm really bad (mainly winter) I have emergency inhaler and antibiotics and oral steroids for bad chest infections and wheeze. I feel so much better now have it under control and have my life back. Once you have it managed and find the right drugs that work for you you will be in control and will find life gets back to normal. Also it takes a while for your body after pregnancy to really get back to normal and settle hormone wise. My little one is 19 months and feel back to normal now with hormones settled. So my advice would be don't despair, your asthma just needs to be managed well and find the right drug combination. I still can't believe I'm asthmatic now. I hope you can see a good doctor and get a plan sorted that works for you.
