Anyone been to the royal Brompton?

As my asthma seems to be progressing badly and my specialist can’t get control of it I’ve been referred to the royal Brompton for a second opinion I just wondered if anyone has been there and what do they do differently and how thorough are they?

Hi sorry to hear that your not doing so well atm

I’m at the Brompton. I had a bit of a rocky start there as I had my difficult asthma protocol when I was in a ‘good’ month and so was asymptomatic... it wasn’t til they saw me a couple of months later that they understood what I meant by ‘when I’m well, I’m really well, when I’m ill, I’m really ill’. Now tho they are really supportive. I’ve had a couple of weeks doing a pred wean there, and also a week for hydrocortisone therapy, (avoided admittance there last week as they had no beds, so was transferred to my local - didn’t even feel that bad!)

They are really lovely, can advise on different meds, and put you forward for ‘trials’ of the more expensive treatment (like Xolair which is what they’ve put me on and I feel like it’s making a massive difference in getting my control back!). They are also experts in asthma (and all thing respiratory), so are more aware of what are warning signs specialised to each conditions (I once got sent home from my local with a massive chest infection, and sats of 92... 2 days later I was almost in ITU... my local has the same expectations of me (26 asthmatic) that they have of a 70+ COPD patient 🤨)

They do a lot of tests during the protocol week (lung function, FeNO, allergy, speech and language, physio etc) depending on you’re triggers and history to try and find the best route to treatment for you.

Hope you find something to help you

Really does sound good there, everyone I’ve ever seen has been puzzled by my symptoms always felt whatever is going on with my lungs has always been very different to the normal asthma as anything slightly physical like stairs has always had me out of breathe, I’ve tried so many medications and didn’t respond very well to them so hopefully they find a long term anti inflammatory drug cause I’ve been on 3 course of steroid in the last 3 months and it’s good when I’m on them but as soon as I’m off them back to square one ain’t it, nothing more annoying is there
