I have been nominated to do the Ice bucket challenge, i do have asthma, but it is under control, i do suffer with chest infections and have had pleurisy a few times in the winter. it is a group challenge in October and i was wondering if this challenge will affect my asthma,, is it a wise idea to do this. Thank you.

Ice bucket challenge
Asthma UK released a statement on facebook about doing the ice bucket challenge as an asthma patient which you should be able to find here

Really only you can decide whether to do it or not, I think a major consideration is how sensitive your asthma is to temperature or if an anxiety related to the challenge could trigger you asthma. I will say that if on the day you don't fee 100% on the day don't risk it. In terms or minimising the risks you could take a dose or your reliever inhaler 15-20 minutes before the event like many do for exercise induced asthma and you should probably make sure you get yourself warm and dry ASAP after the challenge. You could try discussing the challenge with your doctor or asthma nurse or even the asthma uk nurses (phone number at the top of the page) to get a medical opinion on the safety of the challenge regarding your personal circumstances. Most importantly there is absolutely NO SHAME in not taking part in order to protect your health!
I myself have been nominated too but having only just been discharged from hospital yesterday I am not willing to do it yet, especially as temperature changes are a trigger for me. That said I have made a donation and will probably be doing the challenge at a later date. I swim in open water regularly so I know how my body responds to cold water but I'm not willing to do it unless I feel 100% asthma wise.
I was nominated on the weekend but have been struggling with my chest/asthma too. So I have agreed to do it when things have settled..hopefully this weekend. (But each day is obviously different with regards to asthma so who knows!!!!)
I'm undecided about whether I would do the challenge, I'd probably not because I'm certain that my asthma would let me know about it afterwards.
Yes it's for a good cause but if doing so makes you ill then that negates the gesture.
If in doubt then don't, is my (albeit carmugenly) advice.
I did it today
The water didn't seem that cold to me but there wasn't actually any ice in it LOL
I will be making my donation to Asthma UK rather than ALS / MND
I was nominated too, but gave money to charity instead. It's still winter here and my asthma is triggered by cold air. I've also just finished a short course of prednisolone and just feeling better, so no way am I taking the challenge loll. X Sue
