I'm getting a claggy feeling in my throat, like thick mucus that I can't swallow/bring up. At times it briefly closes off my throat and I can't breathe for a second or two. Any ideas what it could be?
Asthma s not 100%, averaging 75-79% on peak flow, symptoms 3-4 times a week (2-6 puffs at a time) but not particularly symptomatic when having this issue

post-nasal drip??? maybe?? do you get hayfever? i wonder if going to GP for a nasal spray type thing might help with something like that? and drinking planty might help to thin it out? never come across that myself apart from when i have a bad cold! can you tolerate breathing in steam? might help thin it out if lungs cope with it! or Viks?? maybe! sounds nasty though - hope it goes away soon!

I think Soph is right re post nasal drip - our description is how I would describe mine. I tend to get it after hayfever (ie hayfever was really bad at the beginning of the week but getting the pnd symptoms now) and when I have a cold. I find steam works so spend a fair time sitting in the bath but if it is still troubling you I would mention it to a pharmacist, nurse, GP etc as it does set my asthma off. They may prescribe nasal sprays or change the one you are currently on as apparently some are better for pnd/sinus problems (according to my ENT anyway). I hope it sorts itself out soon though as it is rather unpleasant.
Thanks Soph, I hadn't heard of post-nasal drip until I'd heard someone mention it here, maybe that's what it is? I do get hay fever but it seemed to be tree pollen that bothered me, no symptoms now. Steams a quick and easy thing to try, will have a go tomorrow. I do tend to drink plenty anyway.
Thanks for your thoughts, its one of those things you think isn't worth seeing gp on its own about, but then forget to mention when there for something else! Maybe I could ask the pharmacist next time I get my prescription.

I'll mention it to the gp next time I'm in then, or see if pharmacist can suggest something. I stopped taking the antihistamine as my hayfever symptoms have stopped, maybe I ought not to have, or as you say maybe a spray may be more effective? In the meantime I'll quite happily veg in the bath with a book, all in the hope to stop it, my husband hates it when I try to clear the mucus (cue gross noises) but when it blocks off your airway, it really must be done!

Yes I get the same thing when my hayfever is really bad or sometimes if I have a cold and I end up gasping and making a horrible choking sound because it stops me breathing in for a minute. Maybe you do need to continue antihistamine.
