Anyone else utterly FED UP with asthma?

Okay...sorry everyone but this is going to be a RANT!

I am so fed up with asthma. I try to stay upbeat but really.......this is more than enough. It's pants, it's not fair and I HATE asthma.

Went to emergency docs this morning and been nebbed etc - viral infection so thankfully no antibiotics but I am really cheesed off and had enough. I would like someone to please take Nellie the elephant and permanently lose her!

I'm on stage 3 of 4 of my action plan....I do NOT want another admission.....it's a beautiful day and all I can do is sit in the garden.....I would really like to go for a walk but that's not going to happen today :(

Sorry everyone.....it's just so relentless and never ending......I would like to be able to forget about asthma for a while.......tired :(

Oh and no-one worry about me! I am following my action plan and actually have gone to seek medical help earlier rather than later (hence the neb at docs!) and am being very sensible....just hacked off.......and if this wasn't an open forum I would be putting it in much stronger terms!!

FeeJay, I know how u feel. Asthma is relentless and everything is affected. If I'm not ill, then I see my son ill and I feel I can never escape it. He recently told me life wasnt fun anymore and I knew just what he meant. It's sad when a 13 yr old says that and I try to be positive, but privately it gets me down too. I keep hoping things will get better. On the plus side, he is better than a year ago and consultant says he thinks it will get easier as he grows older and stronger (no such hope for me lol!!).

feejay, i feel exactly the same way.

if only nellie would 'pack her trunk and say goodbye to the circus' and leave us alone, at least for a little while than she has been lately.....

especially with all the colds/viruses around lately seems all of us are suffering a bit more, grrr!!!!

had enough trips to costa than i care to think of, i try to fight it and manage as best i can at home, but only so much you can do of your action plan isnt there..

like you, try to stay positive, upbeat, putting on a brave front, smile :S

i just try to look at the positive side of it, could be worse, and that i will be better, things will improve and once i get over yet another infection and visit to costa i be able to breathe A LITTLE BIT BETTER and be able to walk a little more and hopefully go back to work and feel almost 'normal' again :)

keep your spirits up and get well soon x x x

Thanks for saying this! I can so relate. I'm fed up too. It's like never ending. It does suck.

Bee

i kno what u mean i have been bad for 4 days now and have only got a little bit better.

It gets you down.

Get better soon

Amanda

Take care Fee, rest up and try to take things easy. The last thing you need is a stay in Costa. Life can be very frustrating at the minute for those of us who Nellie takes a liking to. A combination of asthma, loads of bugs and viruses, the time of year and changeable weather always equate to ""fun""

Look on the bright side, if it had not been for Nellie and this forum most of us would never of had the privailage of chatting to each other lol

Mark

wot is getting to me at the mo,

is i am writing this post - and its almost 4am, i am awake at silly o'clock in the morning, as nellie decided to say hello to bring very loud trumpets, which meant that PF plummeted and i needed to use 2 nebs to get rid of her again, to stop green meanies from taking me to costa (no thankyou!)

this always happens at silly o'clock in the morning... so frustrating!!! i hardly get much rest during the day at the mo through coughing and pain of recent attacks and current infections, and she bothering me at nights as well???? . . . thats when she seems to be worst. anyone else notice that, or is it just me. either early hours of morning, or when i manage to eventually get some sleep, first thing when i wake up in the morning she is my alarm clock with my coughing fits as well....

argh!! so frustrating!! ...... its okay, when i am 'well' :)

xxx

Oh yes, really hacked off with it.

Fed up of needing blue after just going up stairs.

Fed up of painful sides,

Coughing up not very nice things

Breathless at the worst ever time to be breathless:(

Fed up of doing pfs

Fed up of inhalers

Fed up of being fed up

But apart from that, im really happy :)

Howie :)

Howie and Snowygirl are both spot on.

I find it so depressing sat watching tv thinking to myself a fancy a coffee but knowing that I will need a blast on blue prior to the marathon trip through to the kitchen to turn the kettle on. Upon on completion of this epic task I then end up spilling half my coffee because I an shaking so much and by the time I have drunk my half cup of coffee I feel so garbage that I wonder why the hell I bothered.

Then as for bed time, is any of it worth it knowing that I have better odds of winning the lottery than what I have of getting a good nights sleep.

It is quite sad when you consider a couple of hours kip as a decent nights sleep.

As I write this at 6am sitting on my bed under the care and attention of costa del nhs, I reckon that I managed at approx 1 hours sleep, add to that the 3 hours the night before and the grabs total of zilch the night before I wonder why I feel so knackered and run down.

As soon as Nellie pays a visit my body just surrenders !

fed up of meds

fed up of pf

fed up of worried parents who cant think of anything better to ask me about

fed up of extra meds

fed up of costa

fed up of tests n jabs

fed up of asthma

fed up of bein fed up

sometimes i feel like chucking all my meds down the toilet, i get that fed up of them.

anyway, its great to have somewhere to rant about it all, hihihihi...

Trust you are a bit fed up then Hannah ?

Take care

YUP!!!

I hate my asthma but my asthma also hates me im in a lose lose situation at min as everything does what it like even when I protest against it and fight it off with a neb or 3

sleep? wots that? after writing my post earlier at 4am, the 2 nebs werent enough for nellie, so a 3rd was required to keep me away from costa, totally off my action plan, but i am not prepared to give up the fight, and i won, this time. but awake under my duvet till 6. then again at 8. argh!!!!

come on, some lee-way would be nice, pretty please?!

although i did sleep then tfrom 9-12 which even though at 3 hrs is only a lil bit, as quite a lot.

lets hope tonite is better.....

and side effects of all the wheelbarrow of meds, and side effects of the meds for the meds we take for the side effects we get from those, dont get me started!!!!!!!

x x

My asthma meds give me tachycardia when I'm ill, and that makes me feel like crap too. This is actually my worst problem. The meds work O.K., but the side effects are horrible.

And yes, I think 2 a.m. is the bewitching hour because if I'm sick, that is when I will have an attack.

Bee

Looks like I struck a chord with quite a few of you!

Thanks for all your comments guys - some of you made me smile and you all made me feel a bit better about things :)

Sorry to hear so many are struggling - here's hoping we all feel somewhat better soon......specially you Yorkie.....hope you manage to escape costa.

Feejay

yes feejay, you have us all ranting and raving now! lol.

feeling pooey again, coughing like crazy, temperature up through the roof, causing me shake (rigors) with it and wheezy more. thought this infection was going as stopped tsaking 5th lot of antibiotics in as manyweeks today, popped along to costa to see camidoc, seems this stubborn bugger hasnt gone... given yet another 2 LOTS of antibiotics for another week... so that will be a total of 7 lots of antibiotics in 6 weeks :S

how many antibiotics do we all actually have to go through in a year???????

sorry for the ranting, but it looks like another LLLOOONNGGG NITE AHEAD!!

sleep, whats that again?

love and hugs to all and yorkeirion, hope ur out of costa soon. man utd 1 - bolton 0 :P x x x

I certainly am - it 4am and i need some kip but stupid lungs protest.

Nebbing 3hrly and pred back up to 60mg - really cant risk going in as despaerately want to make it to a very good friends 50th on Sat however i am seeing GP tomoz for my son but he is very good and will check for infction for me.

Just totally fed up with asthma ruining all my plans and limiting what i can do now soooo much i long for the days when i swam for my county and hiked for hrs now i lucky to get to the other roomwithout probs -gggggggrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr!!!

Totally fed up with being short of breath every day for the last 10 months and not knowing the cause - consultant thinks it is something as well as asthma.

Fed up with managing 10 mins of gentle, snail pace activity and then needing 45 mins rest.

Fed up with using all of the energy i do have on work, bathing, dressing & housework.

Fed up with not being able to gardening properly and do ANY walking for pleasure.

But... I am still happy and loving the spring!

(Thank you Feejay, it feels good to rant!!!)

My problems are minor compared to many - no costa, Nellie not visiting much, PF reasonable but I am sick to death of coughing. I've been doing it continuously for 6 months now and I'm tired and fed up with it. The worst thing has been the side effects of Ventolin, which makes me anxious - not about the asthma, which would be reasonable, but about everything else, which isn't reasonable at all. Finally got someone to listen to me, switched to lovely Symbicort and anxiety is fading away nicely. However, still coughing and still tired and fed up.

I'm not the one with the asthma and i'm fed up of it, can't imagine how fed up you guys are, i'm fed up for my poor little man, 8mths old and breaks my heart that everytime he shuts his eyes to rest he coughs and coughs till he's heaving and going purple, i can share the sleep deprivation tho :(

PS: can you help me with yr code....costa, etc?? New to all this.....

Hi LMajor and welcome to the Forum. Costa means Hospital, nellie means Nellie the Elephant (sitting on our chests) - just our little jokes!

I think I just pulled a muscle in my rib cage and I'm really unhappy with the world this morning:(. And yes I utterly hate coughing sometimes. Especially when it goes on and on like that for weeks.

Yep fed up too, and hate the coughing!

No Costa for me either, which I'm grateful for, but really sick of not just the coughing but being breathless so much and not able to do stuff I want, feeling knackered, and the BRAIN FOG (I am so sick of forgetting stuff and feeling stupid all the time, and other people noticing and commenting that I'm not 'with it'.)

Also with how much I'm actually looking forward to a hospital appointment - as a 25-year-old this just seems wrong. Plus every time I do feel slightly better or my PF goes up (not that with me that seems to have much relevance to how I feel) I get worried in case when I go they think I'm making it up or overbreathing and send me away again. I don't want to feel bad, but I do want the hospital to understand the worst it can get (even if this is not the worst it can get for some), and to get that I'm not typical but it doesn't mean I'm not feeling it!

Sorry for all that! Hope things get better for everyone, especially Snowygirl and yorkieiron as you especially sound like you've both been having a rough time of it - can't do much except sympathy but you have that, as does everyone else who's been having a bad time recently. (Not getting sucked into the football debate though ;))

haha thankyou philomela!! yes rough time indeed, not getting easier either :S

that made me laugh bout the football debate!!

another thing i am bloody fed up with is taking antibiotics!! as said on previos posts am taking my 6th + 7th courses now in past 6 weeks bringing my total since xmas to 8 :( grrr!!!!

x

I know how you feel! I got told to get a life three times by an ED nurse last week because I knew too much about my asthma. Luckily it wasnt my local ED so I wont have to see him again. I feel like I'm now Isla 'The asthmatic', rather than being a person! Grr!

My hospital are soo busy fighting over who is paying for a new treatment that they don realise how much I am suffering waiting for it! Grr!

Hopefully they will sort you out soon and make you feel better....and hopefully I will win the lottery and I can just give them the money for my treatment!

everytime i go to my local a+e they say 'oh no. not u again!' which is nice in some ways, depending on who is saying it. and they know what i respond to... but at the same time, others say it awfully and mean it. cant you keep away, and things like 'you are here now more than when you actually worked at this hospital!' grrr....

be nice to win the lottery tho ;)

x

Had a good week but since tea time my pf has dropped and now puffing for England and bad

attack going up stairs ggrr!!!

Its cruel ,get a few good days and just getting use to it and wam xxx

oh no glynis!! u were getting on so well.... hope u better soon :)

damn u asthma >:(

not only do we need to put up with the symptoms and side effects of meds, and the side effects of those, but the recurrent infections, recurrent exposure to radiation due to xrays, repeated painful cannula insertions, incompetent staff attempting to insert cannulas and take bloods, skin testing and worst of all ..... the dreaded A B G ' s does it not end??

I am. Have had two good months and now feel rotten and I'm recording PF for consultant. I want some good readings to avoid the next step and I can feel the infection coming on. No point going to GP - he won't be able to hear anything so won't give me anything but its there. Doesn't matter whats happening, its all to do with what they hear.

If I see it through I might fight it off but the PF will suffer, on shed loads of seretide so it'll take a while. The eczema's going crazy - as it always does with a temperature - so I'm itchy as well. Am very fed up with asthma and doctors!

At what point do others see the GP when they feel an infection coming on? My PFs holding up right now, although a little low. In the past its dived quite quickly as an infection progress's though.

Nothing like a good rant :) I hope things improve for you Glynis.

hi TJ

sorry to hear u feeling pooey, i can but sympathise, but hope things get better not go downhill . . .

when i feel an infection comig, i normally head to gp when i start coughing up yuk that i know is not asthma colour! also if temp starts going up. generally if felling crap + know something aint right.

likewise, TJ if u know something aint right, check it out!!

x x

I feel for you I really do. My asthma is really mild compared to you and other posters - exertion induced but always have a very sticky chest and a permanent ""frog in my throat"" that's very irritating for my partner when trying to get to sleep, annoying cough and rhinitis. No Costa for me so far and only basic medication. Even so, I get fed up with it when I can't do energetic stuff as it brings on the wheezing and breathlessness, so you must have to really work hard to stay positive. Glad to hear you've an action plan, I really hope that things improve for you.

Thanks Snowygirl. I think its just a virus as its not turned nasty (fingers crossed!). I don't want to be threatened with jabs so am possibly a bit over anxious. My peak flow hasn't dropped too much and am writing ""chesty cough"" on the chart - this might show him how well I can deal with it!

KEB - Asthma affects anyone who has it. On here there are some who suffer severely (I'm not one) and they are mostly the very helpful ones to those with a less severe variety. If your fed up, please rant away! Asthma is horrid for affecting peoples lives, I think its better to let it out :)

ur welcome TS, glad i can help, like u say it tends to be us more severely affected who can offer probably our experience ;)

anymore advice etc. u know where to find me :)

cough cough cough today yet again, no yukkie tho lol. cough is main symptom of an attack for me, and what do you know, it developed into a full blown attack after i got a bit too close to dust whilst cleaning :S couldnt manage it with nebs at home so few hrs sent in costa this evening :( back at home now. so really feeling fed up with this darn asthma and cough. aaarrggghhh!!

ME. My asthma went out of control 15 months ago and I am still awaiting for it to become controlled again for more than 2 days. I am fed-up of having to change the dose of my seretide from 50mg twice a day to 1000mg twice a day and having to take 40mg preds every 2 weeks for 5 days. Got my next review in a week on Monday and they are going to do a lung function test too and depending on the results of that they are going to do a referral to a specialist at my local hospital

aaaaaaarrrrrrrggggggggghhhhhhhhhhhh!!!!

come on this is unbelievable! awake till 0715 this morning then a 2.5hrs 'snooze' as i cant justify that as being sleep, can u?!

awake since, but gonna TRY and nap again now :( ...

x x

mega annoyed found out the asthma reviews at my gps are every 18 months because too many people need the drs and she is needed for other things. How fair is that on us with asthma

a-j

wow!! 18 monthly check - ups!!! jeez that is awful.

something needs to be done bout that.

can u complain bout it at the surgery or elsewhere? certain u need to be seen before then, especially if something changes, re: costa, symptoms, need to change meds etc.

at our surgery its normally every 12 mths - i.e. annual check-ups however if like me u are referred to resp consultant, then u are obviously seen by the resp consultant + nurse at the hospital however often they see fit, and in relation to the surgery - they are kept in the loop with clinic letters, so if i need to see the gp in between then its easier. i dont need the annual checks really, so 'my slot' can be used more appropriately for others.

i know it does. It seams to me my gps and the asthma nurse there dont care about asthma. My mum is shocked as i can get really bad as my asthma was quite for 15 years so she is waiting for me to get a worse attack. My slot is taken by other clinics which the gp center does

X

that shows just how little people understand bout how severe our condition is and therefore how closely we need to be monitored and managed!!

just dont understand gp + asthma nurses sometimes. hope things get sorted out, as u really need check ups frequently, grrr!! thats awful for you :(

yeah i know. My mum is worried that i will end up how i was when i was younger. Yeah i hope it gets sorted out soon not that i like my asthma nurse. Yeah well untill i see her can do my pf so she can see

X

defo yes keep a check on yourr pf twice a day as then u can notice any trends. also note any triggers above the pf.

eg. last nite took my pf after coming into contact with dust. so the nurse can see any tips and trends etc if u see what i mean. they can learn a lot from looking at ur pf diary.

when i went to clinic thurs by looking at my diary they finally managed to work out what i had been trying to tell them for months!!! every time i wean down dose of pred even by slight mgs i have a massive attack (other factors sometimes) but now they know its down on paper too... so its very useful to have :)

good luck

Yep,

Me too. I'm not as severe as many on here but getting to the point where G.P. & asthma nurse, who are good, say not sure what to do next if this doesn't work but reluctant to refer. Think they don't like admitting defeat? I'm near max. levels on step 4 management. On 40mg prednisolone for 10 days this time & finally found antibiotics sinusitis should respond to.

Had a couple good days since starting those this last week but back to same old Nellie routine last night, grr. Surprised not hungry a lot and quite tired and sleeping a lot on the steroids which is good, I guess.

I hope things calm down for you TJ.

A locum gave me antibiotics and pred. Am not taking any pred 'til I'm sure I need it (he seemed happy with this). Was doing quite well until my boiler developed a leak earlier. British Gas have disabled it while they wait for a part. The gas fire and my lungs really aren't getting on very well. I'm sure asthma works in strange ways with things around us, things generally seem to go wrong when its around.

Been ok for a few days and went splat last hour ago.

Really hate it

some times it creaps on over 2/3 days but also just crash.

Dont know what caused it all.

its all i want with MD Flair up.

thats all it is, is nellie, wheeze, shortness of breath, cough and pain, therefore = a bloody big pain in the a**e, for which we need inhalers, meds, tablets, nebs, injections, bloods, drips, costa in/ out, pred, antibiotics!!!

cant we please have a break!!!

if only the nhs DID prescribe a holidays....

for all of us who are currently having nellie, or other symptoms, hope we all better soon, big hugs to all

i prescribe us all a holiday in the sun, to the island of Freshair x x x

yaf_user681_8101 profile image
yaf_user681_8101

Think I'd like a nellie zapper. Am fed up, 2 months of easy breathing (albeit with regular ventolin) and now she gets out again. Still, its not too bad, just a heavy weight on my chest and SOB. If it gets worse the pred will sort it out. I'm lucky really.

I hope things calm down for everyone else.

i wonder if things such as nellie zappers do exist :P lol or like darth vader has - the light sabers maybe ?? hmmm...

wish nellie would just take the hint and do one!!

There are days I say to myself ""I wish I was normal"". It sucks cos I was growing out of it - one full ventolin inhaler lasted a whole YEAR!!! I went to Uni in another part of the country, lasted 2 months and had a severe attack that lasted a whole hour. I was so ashamed, I sat in my room constantly taking ventolin and waiting for it to calm down. I look back and think ""that was stupid"".

Sometimes I feel proud cos Im an athlete and I work with it to win medals but there are days when I hate it. Ive had coaches who have seen me get into trouble and totally panic which scares me even more. I feel embarrassed carrying my inhaler and wearing my medic alert bracelet.

I think we are all allowed to get fed up with it - we all have bad days with it. Im trying to cling onto the positives so when I have a good day - I am very positive and grab all opportunities when I can. I still think it sucks at time though!

Hiya all,

I'm fed up, too! Went to see the con a few days ago and lung function awful etc. I actually thought it might have improved a little since last October but no.

Gotta have a bronchoscopy done in a couple of weeks so see what's what and getting tested for food allergies. I do want to find out what's making it all so bad.

Yes, bring back the years where 1 ventolin inhaler lasted a whole year!

So short of breath, tight and chest pains from hell grrrr...

BUT I have decided I am starting to work on being ""friends"" with my lungs. My physio says I'm completely disconnected from them(not surprised as I hate them) but it doesn't help.

It's gonna take a while but I'll try.

Thanks auk for this forum or I would go mental!

Hope we'll all have better times ahead.

Love Lydia xx

Just wanted to say I know how you feel but it does get better. 3 Years ago i was a very fit 23 year that ran rode and walked pretty much all the time i worked in a riding school and being asthmatic i got chest infections which would end up with me being on antibodics etc. At the Doctors and Consultant advise i agve up working with horses and kept mine as enjoyment and within weeks my asthma and admisions to hospital had increasesed by 20%. All the medics blamed my horses and my pets! I was Put onto huge amounts of steriods and other drugs as it was discovered i was allergy to ventloin ( haha). Last year was my worst year ever. 52 admins to A&E. Spend 2 and a halves months ( in total) in res wards and 2 2 week long stays in ITU.I didnt see my horses and still they where blamed, it got to the point where i would be fighting for life before i would go in as the hassle of seeing my consultant would wind me up ( not helping my breathing). I was sent to see Pro Frew at Brighton, and He changed my life. He Told dont let asthma control your life control your asthma and this is how we are going to do. He told me consultant and my GP how to treat my attacks, and i have to keep a diary, how i feel, problems and worries, he also gave me a limit of 1 neb at home then to A&E where my consultant (after 2 ITU admins had given me a plan).

Yesterday i rode my pony for a hour ( have been building it up very slowly since feb) and tomorrow i start work. Yes I am still on steriods (20mg goign down to 17.5on thursady wish me luck) yes i still need my briconyl about 20 times a day BUT they is light at the end of the tunnel. I am terrified of another attack but instead of having to go to a&E every week i have only had 6 this year ( 1 was a failed discharged).

Beleive me i know how low it makes you feel but it will get better, You will have your life back it may not be tomorrow but it will come small positive steps are what you need to take, and try to have something to aim for even if it goignt to the supermarket on your own.
