What's the best way to keep an Aerochamber Plus free of inhaler dust? Salbutamol is bad enough to wash out but this seretide 250 seems not to reach me, no matter how I puff it in. I've taken without spacer several times, to get the correct dose.

getting it in my lungs.

Still keeping my spacer just incase I need it xxx

Hi Grannymo,

i was told to wash the spacer in washing up liquid, but don't rinse the spacer. Leave to dry as the liquid helps the spacer work more efficiently and reduces the static in the spacer. I think i've got that right and if i haven't someone will know. Try that band see if that helps at all.

If cleaning doesn't help then perhaps it needs replacing? Washing once a month as Wolfspirit decribes is the usual advice, with replacement every 6-12 months.

They do seem to feel less effective after more than a year. I've wondered if that's due to the valve becoming clogged or perhaps detergent not forming an effective anti-electrostatic coating on older spacers. Hope you manage to sort it out!

Copied from BNF 59:

""Use and care of spacer devices

Patients should inhale from the spacer device as soon as possible after actuation because the drug aerosol is very short-lived; single-dose actuation is recommended. Tidal breathing is as effective as single breaths. The device should be cleaned once a month by washing in mild detergent and then allowed to dry in air without rinsing; the mouthpiece should be wiped clean of detergent before use. Some manufacturers recommend more frequent cleaning, but this should be avoided since any electrostatic charge may affect drug delivery. Spacer devices should be replaced every 6–12 months.

Hi Ginny,

i didn't know they had such a short life, i wasn't told anything like that when i started using it. But en i wasn't even offered p/flow meter or spacer til i asked for it. Mind you, did you know you are supposed to change p/flow meters every three years? I use volumatic spacer and when i swish the mouth piece in the water it clears the valve automatically, don't know about areo chamber ones.
