Studies/Trials/Research at Southampton General/Uni

Has anyone completed an studies/trials/research at Southamption General/Uni? If so what sort of thing were you asked to do? My consultant has suggested I try to get on a couple of specific trials. I have said yes but just interested in other peoples experiences...

I have done three or four trials here quite recently as for me it was about getting a huge amount of testing in that wouldn't normally be funded by NHS. I have done reversibilities, lung tension/elasticity?? saline inhalation/sputum production, blood tests, nitrous oxide measurements, brochoscopies and related tests.

Everything they do is on the basis that if you don't want to continue you just say and all of thew research nurses and doctors are lovely.

I am wondering if we have the same consultant as he said the same thing as you that it was a way to get further tests done without the cost implications to the NHS and to try and get a better picture of what my asthma is doing... Out of interest what is involved in the lung elasticity testing?

Sorry should have asked how long did the trials/research last for?

There are currently 2 that I know are running both involve the testing process one into general lung disease one into diffcult asthma. Its just allot of testing done for me over 3 visitsone day for bronch, 4 hours for ranom testing and another morning for allergy testing (though not sure if this is trial or not lol) the results go into notes and get used so allot of people on them are to get tested and once they are done you dont here anything back

The consultant said it was for the difficult asthma research and also two other trials which are starting shortly so hopefully I will fit the required criteria. Was the four hour bronch appointment to do with the research or was it tailored to your requirements? Have to admit not overly keen on the allergy testing as everytime I have it done I find out I am allergic to something else... beginning to think ignorance was bliss.

The bronch was abit of both, they took the bits needed for study to look at cells etc and the bits the consultant wanted.

If you had it done in southampton think they would accept that, so wouldnt have to do them again. I didnt have to have spiro again. Its worth getting the battery of tests done as they do the weird and wonderful and it does go into notes. Get expenses paid and the research doctor is lovely, shes almost taken over my care as shes been the one that knows the results and history as looks over and over the notes!

I have the information on one of the studies on my computer so PM me your email and will send it over

Difficult asthma is the one I was last under and before that omalizumab. My doc is Nivenka now as she was doing the research and did the bronch herself, really understanding of the needle phobia and told me off for apologising when I kicked her (really don't do needles!)

The elasticity one was a bit like a reversability one I think, trying to remember, the sent sound waves into lungs to see how far they go and how far they come back??? Then neb you and repeat.

Is great tto get into the research as the tests may pick up something small that may totally change their outlook. Also, now under the research I have email contact with my doc and this works great for me as detemined not to spend my whoile life at the hospital!!

Evening all. Just wondering how could find out about these trials? Is there a website with details or is it done on referrals?

I will dig the number out and pm it to you. the are alway looking for asthmatics and non-asthmatics

Not what you're looking for?
