intal

Hi. Just wondering if anyone here has any experience of using intal as an inhaler. Apparently it's very good for allergic asthma and doesn't tend to cause many side effects. I'm considering asking my gp to let me try it as my asthma is suspected to be seasonal caused by pollen. Many thanks in anticipation.

My GP doesn't have any of his patients on it and hasn't for years, he wasn't even sure it was still available two months ago when I mentioned it, but looked it up and said it was. There are few on here that use it, but I've no experience of it.

Most drugs will cause some side effects in some and not others, but another alternative would be tablet form singulair, used to treat some symptoms of asthma, and also seasonal allergies. Depending on your GP, you may get better luck asking for that. I must say I have had a remarkable response with singulair, and apart from the muscle cramps, which are getting less, this has resolved the exercise induced asthma and taken care of the mild case of hayfever I occasionally got.

Re Intal

Hi there,

I went to the doctors today re my asthma and have been put on Intal 5mg four times daily.

Had to go to 4 different chemist to get it though, it's like gold dust.

He was going to put me on Atrovent, but i had heard that Intal was good for allergies causing asthma, so asked if i could try it.

He advised me that it takes several weeks to start working, but if it doesn't work after 2 months then i will have to go on atrovent. Fingers crossed, will keep you posted.

Kind regards

Moschops

Hi

I used intal when I was a teenager (about 20 years ago now!) and I found it quite an unpleasant inhaler to take. It is very powdery, tastes bad and can leave you with oral thrush. I certainly would not go back to it. I now use Pulmicort very successfully (along with regular chiropractic treatment)but my asthma is chronic and not only allergy induced. Hope this helps.

I was given intal about 9 month a go.I was having trouble controling my asthma.while it did help,im also taking sertide, fixtide and pre.In my opinion all inhalers can give you oral thrush. You just have to be scrupulous with your oral hygine.Intal dos have a unpleasant taste but its a small prices to pay if your asthma is under control.

I spoke to my GP about a yr ago about changing my daughter onto Intal - her asthma is primarily allergy based and i know it worked well for me as a child. i was basically told that steroids were better and that intal is rarely used now so forget about it. Im a bit disappointed about this as to me its a good drug and probably better for a child that already has growth issues and doesn't need the extra side effects of steroids so i hit a brick wall.

So why is it not prescribed really anymore surely where possible children should be kept off steroids.?

Thaks for the replies. I'm already on singulair and my flixotide is at max dose so the status who is not an option. From what I've read of intal it's both effective and has proven to have limited side effects. I think doctors are reluctant to prescribe older drugs because they're as prone to fashion and the persuasion of the drug company rep to try the latest products.
