I hope you mean 20mcg lol! Atovent is another type of bronchodilator but works in a different way to sabutamol, its effect is not as quick.
''Ipratropium works in the lungs, where it blocks receptors called muscarinic receptors that are found on the muscle surrounding the airways. A natural chemical called acetylcholine normally acts on these receptors, causing the muscle in the airways to contract and the airways to narrow.
Ipratropium blocks the muscarinic receptors in the lungs and therefore stops the action of acetylcholine on them. This allows the muscle around the airways to relax and the airways to open. This makes it easier for people with asthma or COPD to breathe.''
just found that online explains a bit more how it works.
Hope this helps

yeah, i meant the 20mcg, sorry my typings a bit off this morning due to costa visit and some lovely pain killers which are making my head a little fuzzy.
thanks, for that claire my doc said its an old fashioned medicine, but when i'm acute it seems to really kick things back under control.
Wondered how you were getting on with atrovent? I've been having it as nebs for the past couple of years and found it was brilliant. Found out by chance after the lovely men in green gave it to me following a call out. Like you say it is considered an old fashioned treatment and I think because you have to take it more regularly that other asthma medication throughout the day. Wondered why it was given in addition to salbutamol and Claire's explanation has solved that one.
Hope you are seeing some improvement.
Take care

hiya used to take the inhaler and found it helped that was till the dosage needed adjusting now on 500mcg nebs 4 times daily which does help with all the other stuff- i find im always a little better after the 5mg salbutamol and 500mcg atrovent nebs together than just the salbutamol ones alone!! Good luck and hope its going well with it!
