Aminophylline is is a theophylline like phyllocontin. It is pretty standard treatment for bad asthma attacks. It has a dual funtion of being a anti-inflamitory and a bronchodilator. When you take it as tablet with the best will in the world you are going to get fluctuating levels as it works its way though your system. Giving it IV is the best way to keep your levels of theophylline steady. The current thinking is levels of between 3-10 for anti-inflamitory and between 10 and 20 to be an effective bronchodilator. Above 20 and you are considered to be in danger of toxicity that is why your phyllocontin tablets were stopped whilst you were getting it IV.
