cramp - quinine and...?

Has anyone had cramp that has gone right across their back before and actually made it harder to breathe? This happened about 2 hrs ago and is only just easing off nowafter a bath(woke kids up ggrrr at least they asleep again now and hubby at work so dont have to worry about him!!)

I am on quinine sulphate at night but it doesnt always help, i eat 2 bananas a day as well as tomatoes.

I can cope with most cramps but this one was quite scary as it had a definite effect on my lungs and was triggered by a coughing session after waking for a neb at 3am!

(as you can see by the ime ive not got back to sleep!!)

I can cope with cramp in most places and frequently do the funky chicken but this was different, am nebbing alot at mo 5mg salb 3hrly +2.5mg prn and 500mcg atrovent 4 times a day.

Does anyone have any ideas or suggestions.

Hops, if there was a cure I would tell you about it. I have got almost used to cramp in very odd places around my hip is the latest, if I sit or move wrong the whole area is agony. Warm baths and I know it is easy to say but not getting too worked up about help If it happens again suggest to hubby a nice gentle massage of the effect area before you go to sleep. I expect you moved or twisted in your sleep wrong which caused the muscles to move in a slightly weird way and cos of the all the nebs etc it triggered the cramp.

sorry I can't be more helpful, like I said if there was cure I would be using it!

Hi Hops,

I sometimes get severe cramping pains across my back and round my chest making it difficult to breathe! I just lie on the bed and try not to move and sometimes using O2 seems to help! (It relaxes me more and makes the effort of breathing less painfull) Oh, and it is deffinatelly cramp - any other pain I phone someone!

Just a thought. Lots of nebs or ventolin s/c doesn't help either!

I take quinine too Hops but I cant stop the cramp you describe when it happens I simply don't move at all or it cramps further !!

Sorry not alotta help but it does happen to me too !!

Thanks guys, i didnt think there was anything else i could do, as you say Bex you would have said!!

Have had cramp in many places before but not there and it did knock me for six for a while, stile quite sore but am going to have a long soak in bath once kids in bed, unfortunately hubby on nights again tonight so no massage:(

Wots the max dose for the quinine im on 200mg is there room for adjustment ?

Hops I think I am on 300 (will check next time I stagger upstairs). I am not convinced it makes a difference but there is no way I am coming off it to see!

Bex

300mg at night Hops is the max - just checked - but dont forget G+T's etc are ontop of it lol

G&T will help relax you but you will need to drink a lot of them for the quinine in them too have any real impact I think it is about 10 or 15.

Bex

Thanks again might ring GP tmoz and ask about upping it as i know it does help (when in costa didnt have it for 3 days and it was a mare!)

As much as i would like to imbibe in lots of G +Ts have just started a v strict diet today and alcohol is no go:( :(

How about magnesium supplements?

I’m trying to think out of the box but more importantly treatments that act as an adjunct to conventional meds.

I’ve been taking magnesium supplements on the advice of excellent new asthma nurse re the relief of cramps and perhaps/maybe/long shot improvement in lung function, - 400 milligram capsules twice a day after meals. But you need to try for a minimum of a month in order to gauge any sort of effect, positive or otherwise.

I’m using 400/12 symbicort unlimited doses after new guidelines and chest prof approval for now, - plus other meds - but I have experienced massive cramps as a side effect.

My most recent and most noticeably public one was in TK Maxx when trying on some shoes, -not bras thank goodness Cathbear! - but was interesting, because I was on my own and in the middle of an aisle in full public view. . (Darling hubby has refused to shop with me since 19 mumble mumble on account of divorce proceedings should his opinion differ from mine, especially concerning the classic, ""does my bum…” line) Was gasping for once NOT cos of asthma but because of the sheer pain of mega constricted calf muscle.

Many asthmatics, chronic, acute, severe et al experience extreme depletion of mineral levels when taking life saving meds especially the ones that could be classified or construed as contributing towards immunocompromised status. I’m thinking of meds such as high dose pred or similar and so on.

Many athletes also experience the same problems – severe cramps - re lack of electrolytes, the most important being that of magnesium, after prolonged exercise.

Magnesium supplements shouldn’t replace part of a diet containing this mineral, e.g. green leafy veg, nuts and seeds, but could be useful in helping to alleviate the onset of cramps. Worth a try as an add on?

PS Hops, I've experienced the, 'take a deep breath' but 'nothing there' cramp - I hope- across my back. It was short lived but worrying. However breathing returned to normal, for me, after approx ten minutes. And yes think nebs at whatevr time of day can increase the risk of cramps.

After a brief chat with nice GP on phone yest he has put up quinine to 300mg and hand delivered the script as he thought he better see me as wasnt too happy about quantity of nebs am on and that im still home. He reluctantly agreed to let me stay home but am back to having daily phone calls from him to monitor how im doing-gggrrrrr!

Mia - will consider magnesium , i did take it a few years ago when there was alot of press re the possibility of it helping the lungs but have to admit didnt notice any difference just an upset tum for some reason. Could you please IM me to let me know the brand you take or is it a generic one?

Thanks.

Kirsten - the best generic for me is by:

CP Pharmaceuticals Ltd Wrexham UK

They also make alot of my other generic meds - but those

are the only ones that don't upset my tummy but

""don't forget I am weird"" so don't just take my

word on it lol

Don't forget different chemists get different generics too lol
