Seretide

I have just been put on Seretide 125 [salmeterol/fluticasone propionate] to be used with a spacer by the specialist instead of Quaver 50.

Will i find that when i get this working [doc says 2 weeks] that i will be able to come off the steroid tablets and feel as good as i do on them? Is it any good.

feeling better at last

For me

For me the seitide worked within a week, but you will feel a big difference

between the steroids and the inhaler.

Please do take the seritide through the spacer as it can cause sore throats,

and leave a nasty taste in your mouth. So have a drink shortly after.

Your nurse should do a full review every 6 - 12 months, not just taking your peak flow.

Take your peak flow at home as well to get a more accurate reading of what it should be like and

if the inhalers are actually doing their job correctly - different inhaler suit different people.

I hope that this helps.

My son has been on his inhaler for the past 3 months know and we have seen an inprovement. He has environmental asthma like me and the winter time is always the worst. He has to have an asthma review every month because fo the seretide inhaler but that is mainly because of his age. Hopefully you will notice a difference in aabout 2 weeks and once the inhaler is working 100% you should notice a huge difference in your asthma

I've been on it for over a year, but wasn't told to use a spacer, and it doesn't leave a nasty taste like clenil, but if you have a volumatic spacer, do use it as it's more effective.

Definitely use a spacer, the asthma nurse told me that if you use a spacer and tidal breathe ie 3-5 even/normal breaths then there are three main benefits 1) less risk of oral thrush 2) less chance the spray will hit the back of your throat and cause a cough 3) last but not least (!) you will get 30% more of the medicine as you are breathing in more times on each puff.

Good luck, I hope you feel better soon xx

Thankyou

Thanks for all your replies it is good to get some positive feed back. The Consultant did say to try to exhale as much as i could then hold my breath afterwards for about 15 seconds wow that is along time.

He told me to time this dont guess it. lol

little advice

i've only recently started on treatment for my asthma, i found this site fantastic for tips but felt to low to post a comment. they started me off on clenil which made me feel so poorly, for a week now i've been using seretide and have seen a slight inprovment. at the moment i have a head cold and i've doubled up on my doses, was i right to do this??. it does mean how ever i'll run out before my next appointment which im guessing i'll have to bring forward, will they get sick of seeing me. i've never had to go to the doctors before.

hi jackie,

doubling of seretide is a questionable one, some say yes and others will tell you no, purely down to the salmeterol content which is not really supposed to be used in that double dose, but for a week or two you are OK, but some research has suggested that the LABA (salmeterol) causes the lower esophageal sphincter to relax more than usual and can be the cause of the dreaded GERD, so do watch for that, some like myself have a separate Flixotide inhaler for doubling the steroid with when needed.
