Some Beautiful Words

25 Replies

Coughadude’s comments about Wordsworth on the hayfever thread got me thinking about starting another thread to do with ‘beautiful words' Could be a favourite poem, saying, prayer, lyrics of a song, anything.

Here’s one of my favourite, cheer up poems, a classic, but seems right for this time of the year . Any other favourites?

Mia

I Wandered Lonely As a Cloud

I wandered lonely as a cloud

That floats on high o'er vales and hills,

When all at once I saw a crowd,

A host, of golden daffodils;

Beside the lake, beneath the trees,

Fluttering and dancing in the breeze.

Continuous as the stars that shine

And twinkle on the milky way,

They stretched in never-ending line

Along the margin of a bay:

Ten thousand saw I at a glance,

Tossing their heads in sprightly dance.

The waves beside them danced; but they

Out-did the sparkling waves in glee:

A poet could not but be gay,

In such a jocund company:

I gazed--and gazed--but little thought

What wealth the show to me had brought:

For oft, when on my couch I lie

In vacant or in pensive mood,

They flash upon that inward eye

Which is the bliss of solitude;

And then my heart with pleasure fills,

And dances with the daffodils.

William Wordsworth 1804

Hi All,

I agree that the ""Daffodils"" poem is wonderful.

Have you, or Mia, ever read the diary of Dorothy, William Wordsworth's sister? It's a really fascinating insight into life in those days, also into th elife of a poet!

And yes, Wendy, I love ""Footprints"" too!

Footprints

FOOTPRINTS

One night a man had a dream. He dreamed he was walking along the beach with the Lord. Across the sky flashed scenes from his life. For each scene he noticed two sets of footprints in the sand; one belonging to him, the other to the Lord.

When the last scene of his life flashed before him, he looked back at the footprints in the sand. He noticed that many times along the path of his life there was only one set of footprints. He also noticed that it happened at the very lowest and saddest times in his life.

This really bothered him and he questioned the Lord about it. “Lord, you said that once I decide to follow you, you’d walk with me all the way. But I have noticed that during the most troublesome times in my life, there is only one set of footprints. I don’t understand why when I needed you most you would leave me.”

The Lord replied, “My Precious child, I love you and would never leave you. During your times of trial and suffering, when you see only one set of footprints, it was then that I carried you.”

*** I think this is a wonderful and moving poem too ****

Kate I have always loved the Footprints Words, I find them at the same time sad and comforting one of my other favourites is Canadian Vespers

While the shadows softly gather

Ere we close our eyes in sleep

We would thank thee Holy Father

For thy Keep

Keep our loved ones free from sorrow

Be thou ever close beside

Help me play the game tomorrow

As thy Guide

There is nothing better than hearing this sung at the end of a campfire, at camp, with lots of new friends, with a Mug of Chocolate in your hands!!

I love the Footprints it means so much to me. I have a footprints locket and chain with an excerpt from it and inside the locket i have a picture of my sis who died last yr.

The poem has given me strength when i have had some tough times to deal with and i also have an engraved copy in my bed room

even tho i'm not religious, i find it inspiring and in someways comforting :)

I am pagan and I love the Druids Prayer I have a copy by my bed

Grant Oh Goddess Thy Protection

And in Protection, Strength

And in Strength, Understanding

And in Understanding, Knowledge

And in Knowledge, the Knowledge of Justice

And in the Knowledge of Justice, the Love of it

And in the Love of it, the Love of All Existences

And in the Love of All Existences, the Love of the God and Goddess

God, Goddess and All Goodness

I also love the words to Enya's A Moment Lost.

It's only now when words are said

that break my heart in two,

I wonder how you can endure

all I've said, all I say to you.

How strong, how brave, how true of you

to bear the hurt I gave.

I know it tears your heart in two;

all I've said, all I say to you.

After all the words are said,

after all the dreams we made:

every one a precious one,

every one a summer sun...

A moment lost, forever gone

can never be again,

so know how much it means to me;

all you said,

all you gave,

all your love to me.

Some More Beautiful Words

Coughadude I have a copy of Dorothy Wordsworth’s Grasmere Journal, (one of the entries was the inspiration for Wordsworth’s daffodil poem), and make regular pilgrimages to Dove Cottage, and that area of the Lake District.

I love The Footprints poem too. It IS so moving. Thanks for reminding me of that one Kate.

Bex, I love the sense of unity inherent in The Druid’s Prayer.

Here are some more beautiful words that always inspire me.

THE INVITATION

It doesn't interest me what you do for a living.

I want to know what you ache for and if you dare to dream of meeting your heart's longing.

It doesn't interest me how old you are.

I want to know if you will risk looking like a fool for love,

for your dreams, for the adventure of being alive.

It doesn't interest me what planets are squaring your moon.

I want to know if you have touched the center of your own sorrow, if you have been opened by life's betrayals or have become shrivelled and closed from fear of further pain.

I want to know if you can sit with pain, mine or your own, without moving to hide it or fade it or fix it.

I want to know if you can be with joy, mine or your own, if you can dance with wildness and let the ecstasy fill you to the tips of your fingers and toes without cautioning us to be careful, be realisitic, to remember the limitations of being human.

It doesn't interest me if the story you are telling me is true.

I want to know if you can disappoint another to be true to yourself.

If you can bear the accusation of betrayal and not betray your own soul. If you can be faithful and therefore trustworthy.

I want to know if you can see Beauty even when it is not pretty every day, And if you can source your own life from its presence.

I want to know if you can live with failure, yours and mine, and still stand on the edge of the lake and shout to the silver of the full moon

""Yes!""

It doesn't interest me to know where you live or how much money you have

I want to know if you can get up after a night of grief and despair, weary and bruised to the bone and do what needs to be done to feed the children.

It doesn't interest me who you know or how you came to be here.

I want to know if you will stand in the center of the fire with me and not shrink back.

It doesn't interest me where or what or with whom you have studied.

I want to know what sustains you from the inside when all else falls away.

I want to know if you can be alone with yourself and if you truly like the company you keep in the empty moments.

Oriah Mountain Dreamer

thank youfor startng this thread mia. i love poetry and not only enjoyng these wordsbut thanks to yuo i have founda whole new worldof internet litrary discusion.. have bookmarkd it for later. this is one of my very favoriet poems by oneof my favuorite romantic poets John Keats (copyied and pasted thnks to the net):

When I have fears that I may cease to be

Before my pen has glean'd my teeming brain,

Before high-piled books, in charactery,

Hold like rich garners the full ripen'd grain;

When I behold, upon the night's starr'd face,

Huge cloudy symbols of a high romance,

And think that I may never live to trace

Their shadows, with the magic hand of chance;

And when I feel, fair creature of an hour,

That I shall never look upon thee more,

Never have relish in the faery power

Of unreflecting love;--then on the shore

Of the wide world I stand alone, and think

Till love and fame to nothingness do sink.

I like the lyric to Neil Diamond Hello again it reminds me of people in my life that are close to me...........

Hello again hello

Just called to say, hello

I could'nt sleep at all tonight

And I know its late but I couldn't wait

Hello my friend hello

Just called to let you know

I think about you every night

When I'm here alone

And your there at home

Maybe it's been crazy

and maybe I'm to blame

but I put my heart above my head

we've been through it all and you loved me just the same

And when you're not there

I just need to here

Hello, my friend, hello

Its good to need you so

Its good to love you like I do

And feel this way

When I hear you say hello

Hello my friend hello

Just called to let you know

I think about you every night

And I know its late

But I couldn't wait

Hello

Hey Mia,

I've only just read the Invitation (Oriah Mountain Dreamer) you posted a while ago.

Sorry I didn't see it till now!

Those words are really beautifuland so inspiring!

Thankyou.

Hi

I am not good on poems but I do have an analogy I thought of.........

'Life is like surfing you have to take each wave as it comes and take the rough with the smooth if you do this you will always float'

Giggles x x

all that comes to mind is 1999 and the treble. i really must read more literature. My usual dean Koontz don't contain much inspirational text :-)

Here are some more words.. for you Lis. Hope you like them

Like the empty sky it has no boundaries,

Yet it is right in this place, ever profound and clear.

When you seek to know it, you can not see it.

You can not take hold of it,

But you can not lose it.

In not being able to get it, you get it.

When you are silent it speaks;

When you speak it is silent.

The great gate is open wide to bestow alms,

And no crowd is blocking the way.

The Lake at Innesfree

Great thread! I love poetry. One that I personally find particularly moving is one that I used to recite with my Grandfather. I read it at his funeral, but that's not why I like it. I like it because I can see the place and it is so calming. Anyway here it is.

I will arise and go now,

And go to Innisfree,

And a small cabin build there,

Of clay and wattles made;

Nine bean rows will I have there,

A hive for the honey bee,

And live alone in the bee-loud glade.

I will arise and go now,

For always night and day

I hear lake water lapping

With low sounds by the shore;

While I stand on the roadway

Or on the pavements gray,

I hear it in the deep heart's core.

And I shall have some peace there,

For peace comes dropping slow,

Dropping from the veils of the morning

To where the cricket sings;

There midnight's all a glimmer,

And noon a purple glow,

And evening full of the linnet's wings.

Lyrics - On Days Like These

Why? Cos they are beautiful words!( despite The Italian Job film connection)

Questi giorni quando vieni il belle sole

la la la la la-la-la-la la la la la

On days like these when skies are blue and fields are green

I look around and think about what might have been

and then I hear sweet music float around my head

as I recall the many things we left unsaid

its on days like these that I remember

singing songs and drinking wine

while your eyes played games with mine

on days like these I wonder what became of you

maybe today you are singing songs with someone new

I'd like to think you're walking by those willow trees

remembering the love we knew on days like these

its on days like these that I remember

singing songs and drinking wine

while your eyes played games with mine

on days like these I wonder what became of you

maybe today you are singing songs with someone new

Questi giorni quando vieni il belle sole

La la la la la la la la la.....

Lyrics - Three Little Birds

Why? - Cos they are beautiful uplifting words

Dont worry about a thing,

cause every little thing gonna be all right.

Singin: dont worry about a thing,

cause every little thing gonna be all right!

Rise up this mornin,

Smiled with the risin sun,

Three little birds

Pitch by my doorstep

Singin sweet songs

Of melodies pure and true,

Sayin, (this is my message to you-ou-ou:)

Singin: dont worry bout a thing,

cause every little thing gonna be all right.

Singin: dont worry (dont worry) bout a thing,

cause every little thing gonna be all right!

Rise up this mornin,

Smiled with the risin sun,

Three little birds

Pitch by my doorstep

Singin sweet songs

Of melodies pure and true,

Sayin, this is my message to you-ou-ou:

Singin: dont worry about a thing, worry about a thing, oh!

Every little thing gonna be all right. dont worry!

Singin: dont worry about a thing - I wont worry!

cause every little thing gonna be all right.

Singin: dont worry about a thing,

cause every little thing gonna be all right - I wont worry!

Singin: dont worry about a thing,

cause every little thing gonna be all right.

Singin: dont worry about a thing, oh no!

cause every little thing gonna be all right!

Like Bob Marley too Derek...

Some more beautiful words.

Why? Cos just spent half the night paraphrasing some of the Bard's most beautiful love sonnets for my students today.

Here is one of my favourite Shakey sonnets in all its original glory.

Sonnet 116. Let me not to the marriage of true minds

Let me not to the marriage of true minds

Admit impediments. Love is not love

Which alters when it alteration finds,

Or bends with the remover to remove:

O no! it is an ever-fixed mark

That looks on tempests and is never shaken;

It is the star to every wandering bark,

Whose worth's unknown, although his height be taken.

Love's not Time's fool, though rosy lips and cheeks

Within his bending sickle's compass come:

Love alters not with his brief hours and weeks,

But bears it out even to the edge of doom.

If this be error and upon me proved,

I never writ, nor no man ever loved.

William Shakespeare

Mia, your choices are uncanny - 'The Invitation' has been a favourite of mine since being given a copy at work when I worked in Palliative Medicine, I have a copy of it beside my desk so I can see it when I am studying. My Godmother read Sonnet 116 at my wedding too.

Some more beautiful words, a prayer which has been attributed to an American Confederate soldier and also to Henry Viscaldi. I am a Christian but I think it has an important message even if you don't have religious beliefs.

I asked God for strength that I might achieve,

I was made weak that I might learn humbly to obey;

I asked for health that I might do greater things,

I was given infirmity that I might do better things;

I asked for riches that I might be happy,

I was given poverty that I might be wise;

I asked for power that I might have the praise of men,

I was given weakness that I might feel the need of God;

I got nothing I asked for,

But everything I hoped for;

I am among all men most richly blessed.

Thanks Em. That poem meant a lot to me too, especially over the last year when my asthma went totally haywire and I have felt far from healthy and had by job in doubt too.

Ange xx

I love that prayer too EmH.

Here is another of my favourite, (and conciliatory) love sonnets.

For all those who love, and who are loved by others.

Sonnets from the Portuguese 43: How do I Love thee?

How do I love thee? Let me count the ways.

I love thee to the depth and breadth and height

My soul can reach, when feeling out of sight

For the ends of Being and ideal Grace.

I love thee to the level of everyday's

Most quiet need, by sun and candlelight.

I love thee freely, as men strive for Right;

I love thee purely, as they turn from Praise.

I love thee with the passion put to use

In my old griefs, and with my childhood's faith.

I love thee with a love I seemed to lose

With my lost saints,--I love thee with the breath,

Smiles, tears, of all my life!--and, if God choose,

I shall but love thee better after death.
