has anyone else had a sick child for about 2 months and counting......

it's driving me nuts (and my son!). week after week, one cold after the other. just as he gets better, he gets another. people have said to me that people with asthma are more susceptible to contracting colds - is this true? this is our ""first"" winter with asthma and it's just pants!!! have found myself checking the calendar, wondering when we'll get a break between this cold weather and then the hay fever season kicking in. ha ha. sorry, really needed a moan!

2008 my son was out of playschool from nov to feb 09 as he got a cold (they had half hr outdoor play daily) and this affected his asthma, it the went onto his chest. he was on antibiotics like anything, his inhalers kept being altered and he ended up in hospital a few times. as you say it was 1 after another.

luckily from nov 09 to present he has been fairly good. he has been off for the past 2 weeks with the first chest infection in a year. again his inhalers have been altered. he went back to school today although still coughing and wheezing, but he seems fine.

Yeap we are going into our 5th month of back to back colds and coughs. My son has environmental asthma all year round the only tim ehe seems to be on a upper as we know call it is September, October, March and April the rest of the year is full of nothing but anti-bios and steriods. Every year seems to be a little better than the last year and I can't wait for the year when we spend more of the year healthy than we do ill.

Your entitled to moan its what this sites all about.

Am afraid to say, but I think it is the norm for children with asthma to get cold after cold, plus other ailments. I think asthma seems to weaken the immune system. And in my sons case severe asthma attacks caused damage to his lungs and chest.

Every other month he seems to end up with a different ailment , and am sure it all stems from the problems asthma brings.

Hope I hav'nt made you more fed up with my reply. You just have to keep on battling with everything thats thrown at you, makes you a stronger person, but a very tired person ha ha. Well I am anyway.

thanks for your messages. i went to see the respiratory nurse today and she thinks that my son's asthma is uncontrolled and that that's what the trouble has been. felt a bit guilty because when talking it through with her, i soon realised that these mysterious colds were in fact allergic rhinitis. bad mummy!! he can't tolerate montelucast so we're going to try cetirizine. fingers crossed.... xx

Yippeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee. Am so, so happy, as today our little boy's asthma has been seemingly 100% controlled for the third day running (first time ever). No hint of any symptoms whatsoever. He's been about 4 miles on his bike, broken up my a good run around at soft play. I've never seen him like it before and I'm over the moon. I don't want to put him to bed!!! And all because of a fabulously experienced respiratory nurse simply prescribing him cetirizine.

When my son was between 2 years and 4 years he was constantly ill with allergies, viruses and bugs which triggered his asthma. Now he is 5 and a half he is so much better. He seems to have built up some immunity which has meant his asthma has improved. Now it just grumbles every now and then from the cold or hayfever. I hope this will be the same for your child. I had times when I found it difficult and didn't know what to do. I hope it starts to get better for you.

Hi Glad things have calmed down. Don't feel guilty, it's trial and error with meds.

We are having our second ever good winter with my Son and I know why. We went to Lanzarote for some winter Sun in Oct/Nov last year as my Son had been so ill most of last year. We did this in 2003 when my parents lived in Spain for a bit. The warm weather kept him well all through Nov through to Feb. It's the same this year. My hubby lost his job last year and got another 5 weeks later so we used some of his redundancy money for our 1st family holiday abroad. I went to Spain on my own with boys,My hubby has crohns disease so has always been too ill to travel (after 12 years has the perfect meds!!). We are saving now to do the same this year. We book at the last minute as we can't risk booking early (got an all inclusive 4 * hotel for a fab price).I have had the best sleep in the last 3 months that I can ever remember. I did panic about people smoking abroad, got in a right state and nearly canceled. It was fine, no one smoked in doors, it's so breezy outside so no smoke hung around. My Son did have 2 severe attacks on holiday once after swallowing water in the pool and one playing footaball the day after we arrived (we had swine flu 2 wks before and were still recovering).Consultant said shame holidays are not available on the NHS, as I'd give you a script for it every October!! what a fab thought. Hope things get better, Spring is on the way and that causes more problems but at least the cold air isn't about so much.

That is brilliant news. Fingers crossed your little one's asthma stays on the controlled path for a long time. This period of controll will help his lungs so much. I can't wait for when my Ryan goes throughis controlled period again even though that seems liek it is a long way away at the moment. He is anti-bios again but this time the doctor has given him a slightly stronger course to see if it helps more than the normal kiddie dose.

Hi, yep that will be great, we even managed to take the boys out of school a few days for the holiday with approval from school.I explained why we were doing it. My Son has been so well he has managed to go to school nearly every day since November (a first and he's 10 on Friday!!)The school are happy too!! We all win and I had a fabulous relaxing break too!!
