I don't think it is advisable to have a sats monitor at home unless specifically prescribed by a consultant, which in that case the hospital should provide one.

A drop in sats indicates a severe attack and there are symptoms which would indicate a severe attack before the sats may drop. If you just go on sats at home and not the other symptoms it would be very dangerous!

Also a cheap one may not be that accurate either!

I am a severe brittle and I don't have one at home.

Kate

Hi

i agree with kate be very carefull !!

i am also brittle and have bronciectasis use o2 over night and in the day when required, My gp advised me to get one but my resp nurse said you become to reliant on them and a little obsesive ... also ive had a severe attack was vented for a week but sats on admission were 91% which wasnt bad for me really but when blood gasses were done co2 was completly knocked off and ended up being vented for a long time so it can be dangerous..

thanks for your concern. its for my daughter who is three. after a recent hospital stay where i was asked on a daily basis if i knew wot her normal sats levels at home were i thought i might like to have one just to monitor her. i know when shes so ill she needs hospital but additional info from a sats monitor could help me manage her asthma on a daily basis. and convince docs that i.m not a neurotic mother when i look for help for her.

hiya

I know it may seem like u need to hav one. Im not a parent and im sure its very frightenin 4 u wen medics ask wot her normal levels are especially if u dont know the answer. They shudnt hav asked u this really!

As a general rule most people wit asthma hav sats between 95 and 100 percent which is normal. Anythin lower than this and ur daughter will hav symptoms. U will know if her oxygen levels r runnin low witout a sats monitor as she may b pale tired and pos hav a blue tinge noticable on her nose lips and nailbeds. It may seem like a sats monitor is important to have and i hav been told once or twice it wud b gud to hav one, thing is if i felt unwell and checked my sats and they were low this wud cause me more panic. In some people i know who hav them they check them and can b obsessed wit wot their levels are its not worth the stress to urself and ur daughter. Honestly!

I agree wit kate. If ur dr or consultant think ur daughter needs one they shud provide one. I wud discuss ur concerns wit ur daughters consultant or ur gp next time u see

Them! Certainly dont rush into buyin one they're very expensive and the cheaper ones may not b as accurate.

Take care and hope ur daughter is well. Lv kitkat Xx

I have three asthmatic children and am brittle myself and we do not have a sats meter. I can be very unwell in hospital and yet have good sats due to having far more nebules than is normal!

It is more important to be able to provide drs with background information and i keep a peak flow diary for all of my children. They were able to do a peak flow at age three although i don't know if thats cos they've seen me using one twice a day since they were tiny.

I keep a record of how many times a day they need their reliever, if they are coughing/waking at night/very tired. It enables me to spot a downward spiral early and avoid hospital admission.

I also note down any potential causes for worsening in breathing ie at a friends house with pets, at fireworks night - smoke

This has enabled the consultant to be guided in his allergy tests and write an individual management plan for each child which has meant they have not had oral steroids or been admitted to hospital this year.

Its very easy to get paranoid that every dr you see with your child thinks you are overprotective and neurotic BUT every dr will tell you as their mother you know your child best and if you think she is ill go to the dr or hospital, you don't need a machine to prove what you know instinctively anyway.
