bronchoscopy and CT of chest for 2yr old

OK, My 2yr old boy has had a rough run with asthma and has ridiculously high IgEs but they don't know what he is reacting to, and boy have they searched!. He's on seretide, flixotide, ventolin, singulair, desloratidine, domperidone and omperazole. When its hairier he has pred too, which we've gone a whole 4 weeks without!

They now want to do a bronchoscopy and CT of chest under anaesthetic at the same time (audiology have suggested they bung in some grommits at the same time to get value for money out of the aneathetist!).

I know what a bronch and a CT are, but as a mum I am slightly nervous; what will they find, what do they think they'll find, what if he reacts to the aneasthetic blah blah blah. He is small because of being permanently poorly too, so really just wondering what experience people have of combining the two (never mind the grommits!), what questions to ask and stuff.

Thanks

wow, couldve written that myself 2 weeks ago!!

Maddie (also aged 2!) saw her consultant who ordered a bronchoscopy and ct and they were done within a fortnight-last Tuesday!!

I was terrified beforehand (posted on here 'scared') When we got to the hospital her SATs were only 94. She was 'well' though so they decided to go for it. We were warned she may end up on 100% O2 afterwards as her oxygen levels dip rapidly (her main problem)

They warned us about alot of things as her breathing is generally so poor. but she was fine.

They did the ct scan first, followed by the bronchoscopy, all under the same anaesthetic. She couldnt drink or eat afterwards in case she choked but to be honest she didnt wake up for a few hours afterwards so it was ok.

They look for airway abnormality or underlying infection for example.

Have they told you what they could be looking for?? Id definately ask next time you speak to the consultant.

I also told them what I was worried about and they were very sympathetic and supportive. In Maddies case they were looking for 'obliterative Bronchitis' and Bronchietasis as that would justify her constant low SATs. (She had the allergens tested for and were very low.)

We are now waiting for the results.

Feel free to pm me anytime. Its been a flying visit as i have to dash

take care,

Emily.x
