I am currently on a waiting list to get a total replacement of the right knee. I don’t think I have looked forward to anything quite so much since I knew I was getting a bike at Christmas 1975.
In recent months my mobility has been poor, some days I’m barely walking at all other than from bed to the bathroom but on better days I try to get out and walk around the block a bit. My weight is going up because of a lack of activity and although I try to eat healthier it doesn’t seem to make much difference. I’ve cut myself down to 2 meals a day lately, usually brunch and evening meal, I barely drink alcohol but I do have a sweet tooth and find biscuits and sweets hard to resist sometimes. I am losing my confidence with going out because I walk with a stick, small steps and I am in pain with both knees lately. I am fearful that when my time comes for the operation they will suspend it because I will be too heavy. I am around 14 and half stone and 5’10”. I’ve recently been considering weight loss supplements but not sure if they will help if I am so inactive, does anyone have any weight loss advice or recommendations for supplements etc?

I wouldn't think that the weight and height you've given would preclude you from having the op.
I struggle with weight as well and have recently found that an Intermittent Eating plan works for me. Note that I do not say Diet!!
My physio recommended this and it certainly worked for me. Basically you restrict the hours in the day when you eat. I found that an 8 hour window of eating and 16 hours of fasting gave good results for me. You can adjust this to suit yourself. Maybe start of with a 10 hour eating window. There will be days when this is not possible.
Concentrate, obviously , on healthy foods but don't deprive yourself and don't go hungry! I found that the Fastic App was very helpful but there are others.
biccies should be banned from your house! If you need to graze, keep some chopped vegetables in the fridge.
If the biscuits are not in the house, you can’t eat them!
You mention weight loss supplements. If you look at the ingredients in these, what do you see? Things that would not be in any normal kitchen.
Try researching “Mediterranean diet” and eat non-processed food. Make sure you have plenty of protein and if you are hungry, a glass of cold water is a good idea!
I would say don't think of your weight in terms of diet, call it new ways of feeding yourself . Protiens are better than carbs I believe , and as said steroids make you gain weight as do many other drugs. Do eat little and often as if you eat nothing the body shuts down so defeats the best laid plans. i have lost around 6 KG in the last year by simply changing quantities and ruling out high calorie foods, as often said small losses are better than none. I had a knee replacement at 13st and 5ft 1inch. So I don'tsee you as that overweight . Keep up the good work of staying reasonably fit all things considered.
I am in much the same situation as you - I am waiting for my 2nd knee replacement but it won't be for about 4 months. I want to walk but can't - at least not much and not without a stick - I have always walked miles and for pleasure - it is good for your brain, so I am really struggling plus putting on weight as I can only walk with a stick and there is no pleasure in walking at all. I have made the decision this morning to look at joining a gym? I figure that it will get me out of the house and away from food temptation plus I will get an introduction session which should be useful in terms of what I can and can't do - maybe that's something you could think about doing?
Well done for losing the weight and keep up the good work.
I think my concern is not so much what my weight is now it’s the fact it’s going the wrong way and I am struggling to reverse it. I do try to eat healthily but I also turn to comfort foods, especially when I’m feeling sorry for myself which I shouldn’t do really because I have much to be grateful for.
I typically eat a healthy brunch, lately I’ve been eating fruit with muesli and kefir with a sprinkle of cinnamon, it’s really nice although not as nice as bacon and egg. I have a normal evening meal but I do have to fight the craving for sweet treats after that and I don’t always win the fight.
I am just concerned that with my activity levels decreasing my weight will continue to rise and it will give them an excuse not to do the surgery.
Thanks for the tips I’m going to try my hardest to resist and be careful with the calories.
Good luck with trying to lose weight before your op. If you can cut down the carbs and added sugar it will help. Try having fruit or a handful of nuts instead of biscuits/cake/puds. Cherries are lovely now and berries and apples are always good.
